The Gentlemen
Netflix
The recent Netflix series, The Gentlemen, has emerged as one of the standout offerings of 2024. Directed by Guy Ritchie and featuring stars Theo James and Kaya Scodelario, the crime drama has garnered impressive audience ratings, currently sitting at an 8/10 on IMDB.
Despite its success, the show experienced a lengthy renewal process for its second season. Although it aired in March 2024, it wasn’t until August that Netflix confirmed its return, creating a puzzling five-month delay with no clear explanation.
While the renewal is welcome news, reports indicate a lengthy wait for the new season. Filming for The Gentlemen season 2 has just now started in the UK. The sophomore season is expected to mirror the first with eight episodes. However, projected delivery for the new episodes is set for 2026, contributing to an extended gap between seasons.
This delay stems from a combination of the initial five-month wait for renewal and a significant 14-month interval before filming commenced, prompting concerns about how long production and post-production will take. For context, another popular series, The Night Agent, began filming in January 2024 and premiered a year later in January 2025. If The Gentlemen follows a similar timeline, fans might be looking at a May 2026 release. This could mean over two years passing between the first and second seasons, a timeline that trends toward the longer end for streaming shows, which typically have a 1.5 to 2-year turnaround. Although some series, like Squid Game and Wednesday, can stretch production even further, it’s evident that the wait will be considerable.
The pacing of this production raises questions about the decision-making process behind the delay, be it related to cast availability or other factors. Nevertheless, with filming now underway, viewers can look forward to the continuation of the gripping narrative established in season one. That said, eagerly awaiting its release for over a year feels rather disappointing for devoted fans.
For those yet to experience the first season, it comes highly recommended. Although Guy Ritchie has had a mixed trajectory in recent years, The Gentlemen returns him to his roots with compelling portrayals of crime families, heists, and the gritty underbelly of the UK, marking a return to form that outshines the earlier film of the same name.
