As the 2024/25 Broadway season approaches its conclusion on April 27, it prompts a reflection on what has been an eventful year filled with remarkable performances. The season has drawn audiences with a range of productions, and as awards season kicks off, it is an opportune moment to assess how this year’s offerings measure up against those of previous seasons.
It is noteworthy that the Tony Awards Administration Committee will convene once more to finalize eligibility for the last shows of the season. The statistics shared here correspond to anticipated category placements.
Total shows
This year’s Broadway lineup featured a total of 43 productions. In comparison, the previous season (2023/24) showcased 39 productions, while the seasons prior included 40 in 2022/23 and 41 in 2021/22.
Musicals vs. Plays
The current season comprised 21 plays, 21 musicals, and one special event (Ben Platt: Live at the Palace). For context, the 2023/24 season included 16 plays, 21 musicals, and two special events. The distribution for 2022/23 was 24 plays to 15 musicals with one special event, while in 2021/22, there were 22 plays and 15 musicals along with four special events.
New Shows vs. Revivals
This season featured 29 new productions alongside 14 revivals. For comparison, the 2023/24 season also presented 29 new shows but only 10 revivals. In 2022/23, there were 26 new titles and 14 revivals, whereas the 2021/22 season had 29 new shows and 12 revivals.
Closed vs. Still Open
Nineteen productions from this season have already concluded their runs, often due to limited engagements, while 24 shows remain active on Broadway.
When They Opened
In the 2024/25 season, there were 23 shows that debuted during the summer and fall, while 20 launched in the winter and spring. The openings were distributed as follows: one in May, one in June, two in July, one in August, three in September, five in October, six in November, four in December, one in January, one in February, six in March, and twelve in April.
In comparison, the 2023/24 season had 18 summer/fall openings and 21 in winter/spring; the 2022/23 season featured 22 in summer/fall and 18 in winter/spring; while the 2021/22 season recorded 20 summer/fall and 21 winter/spring openings.
Where They Came From
This season saw 22 productions making their Broadway debuts after previously appearing elsewhere. Of these, six shows had initial runs off-Broadway, while seven originated from London’s West End.
