Ananya Panday’s Debut Series, Call Me Bae, Secures a Second Season
Ananya Panday recently made her foray into the world of streaming with the release of Prime Video’s Call Me Bae. The actress has garnered significant attention for her portrayal of Bella, a young woman who experiences a dramatic fall from grace but embarks on a journey to reconstruct her life. This engaging series features a talented ensemble cast, including Gurfateh Pirzada, Varun Sood, Niharika Lyra Dutt, Vihaan Samat, Muskan Jaaferi, Lisa Mishra, and Vir Das, all playing pivotal roles alongside Ananya.
In an exciting update, the show has officially been renewed for a second season. Ananya shared the news through a video announcement on her Instagram account, alongside a playful caption: “Our day couldn’t get any bae-tter! Bella is coming to swoon us over again with a new season #CallMeBaeOnPrime, S2 in development.”
One of the standout features of Call Me Bae is its playful nod to Bollywood culture. Karan Johar, a notable filmmaker and producer, has compared Ananya’s character to that of Poo, famously portrayed by Kareena Kapoor in the classic film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Johar has termed Bella a “glorious Gen Z 2.0 derivative” of Poo. However, Ananya has expressed a sense of respect for this iconic character, stating that she did not aim to replicate Poo’s legacy in any way.
In an interview with Instant Bollywood, Ananya remarked, “I don’t think we are trying at all to touch or even come close to what Bebo (Kareena Kapoor) did because she is the literal icon and the queen. What she did was just a legacy. This is our homage to her. If Bae can be even one per cent as lovable as Poo, then I think we all will be happy.”
Karan Johar further elaborated on this comparison during the series’ trailer launch, stating, “If Rohan and Pooja now would have had to have had a baby girl, she would be Bae. It’s like where Poo ends, Bae takes off.” He explained that both characters share a similar trajectory but also emphasized that Bae is distinctly a product of her generation. “It started with all the fun and games and then she contributes to the emotional gravitas of the ongoings,” he noted.
The narrative of Call Me Bae follows Bella, a South Delhi girl who relocates to Mumbai after losing everything in her life. As she starts anew as a journalist, the series captures her experiences in the competitive journalism landscape while staying true to her unique personality. Alongside Ananya, the show features an impressive cast, including Vihaan Samat, Varun Sood, Gurfateh Pirzada, Muskkaan Jaferi, and Niharika Dutt. Produced by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment, the series aims to deliver a fresh perspective while paying homage to the beloved characters of past cinema.
