Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy has shared insights regarding significant shifts in the storytelling approach for Season 2 of the Disney+ Star Wars series, particularly regarding the narrative pacing. In a move aimed at capturing the essence of Cassian Andor’s character from Rogue One, the upcoming season will implement time jumps that advance the storyline by one year every three episodes. This accelerated format, though ambitious, stems from previous challenges faced during production.
Originally, Andor was envisioned as a lengthy five-season series, intending to explore distinct segments of Cassian’s life over multiple years. However, plans changed when Lucasfilm ultimately decided to reduce the number of seasons to three, and then to just two, to encapsulate the unfolding events. Gilroy discussed this transformation in an interview with SFX magazine (via Games Radar), revealing that during the shooting of the first season, it became evident that the narrative’s vast scope would require an extensive time commitment, complicating logistics for the entire cast and crew. Consequently, they opted to restructure the storyline into a more concise two-season format.
“We were halfway through shooting season 1, coming through COVID and the monumental size of the show, the effort, and everything else was just dawning on us. We realized that I didn’t have enough calories to do it, and Diego’s face couldn’t take the timing because it just takes too long to make it. We were saved by Disney saying, ‘Okay, if you guys can figure out a way to do it, we’re into it,'” Gilroy remarked, illustrating the challenges the production faced.

This new structure not only aims to bring a fresh perspective to the renowned franchise but also presents an intriguing experiment for storytelling in the sci-fi genre. Gilroy emphasized the pioneering nature of this approach, suggesting that it could reshape how narratives unfold in serialized formats within expansive universes.
More details regarding Season 2 are forthcoming, and viewers can anticipate a deeper exploration of Cassian’s transformation into the character we know from Rogue One.
