Andrew Garfield has expressed enthusiasm for potentially stepping back into the role of Spider-Man. However, he seems keen on exploring a fresh and unconventional approach rather than merely reprising his previous portrayal. Garfield took on the iconic role of Peter Parker / Spider-Man in the 2012 film The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, before the franchise was relaunched within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In 2021, he returned as Peter Parker, affectionately referred to as Peter 3, in Spider-Man: No Way Home, sharing the spotlight with fellow Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland. Following this appearance, fans have speculated if Garfield might don the Spider-Man suit again.
During his appearance at Abu Dhabi Comic Con, Garfield was queried about what it would take for him to reprise the role. According to comments reported by Comic Book Movie, Garfield conveyed that he would welcome the opportunity to return but emphasized his desire for something unconventional and surprising. He notably repeated the term “weird,” indicating that he is not interested in just another typical Spider-Man film. He stated:
“I would love to play the character again in some capacity, but I think it would have to be very weird. I think I would like to do something very strange, I would want to do something very unique, and offbeat and surprising.”
What Does ‘Weird’ Mean When it Comes to Spider-Man
The interpretation of what Garfield means by “weird” can vary widely. His remarks may hint at rumors suggesting a possible appearance in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which has recently shifted its release date to June 2027. This animated film is believed to be pushing the creative envelope within the genre, potentially aiming to integrate live-action and animated formats. If realized, this concept could build upon the unique blending of styles showcased in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), representing a bold risk for the upcoming project.
Many fans speculate that Garfield will reappear as Peter Parker in Avengers: Secret Wars, which might feature a scenario where different Marvel universes converge. This setting could allow Garfield’s Spider-Man to interact with various characters throughout the MCU, possibly even exploring alternate iterations of his character. For instance, he could portray a version of Spider-Man living on Spider Island or a completely different persona like Peter Parquagh from the 1602 universe.
Furthermore, Garfield might embody The Superior Spider-Man, a storyline where Doctor Otto Octavius’s consciousness takes over Peter Parker’s body. This portrayal would enable Garfield to delve into a darker, more complex version of Spider-Man, aligning with the tone of earlier films in the series. Notably, this Superior Spider-Man narrative began in 2012, the same year Garfield’s first film released, and concluded in 2014 as The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hit theaters. Despite Garfield’s previous denials regarding his participation in films like Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, speculation continues, fueled by his past experiences with misdirection during promotional events for Spider-Man: No Way Home.
