Google recently showcased the multifunctional capabilities of its Pixel Call Assist, while also announcing some forthcoming updates for its Android operating system. The enhancements will include a user-friendly redesign of the Android Phone app and the introduction of new filters to streamline call management.
In an informative blog post, Google emphasized how users can utilize the Phone app to better manage unwanted spam calls. One highlight of the update is a new set of five filters designed to categorize calls: All, Missed, Contacts, Non-Spam, and Spam.
These filters will soon be accessible in the “Recent” tab of the Phone app, providing users with more efficient ways to organize their call logs. While Google has yet to announce the specific rollout date for this update, its addition aims to enhance user experience.
Additionally, Google is set to improve the call interface on Pixel devices. This update will facilitate quicker access to the Pixel Call Assist feature, making essential tools like Call Notes, Direct My Call, and Audio Emoji more readily available. According to insights from 9to5Google, this UI adjustment has reportedly already been implemented on the Pixel 9 series, featuring a dedicated Call Assist button that leads users to its various functionalities.
Furthermore, the post highlighted other valuable features within the Phone app, such as Live Caption and Call Screen. Live Caption serves as an accessibility aid, providing real-time transcriptions of conversations for those who are deaf or hard of hearing, and enabling them to respond via a keyboard that the app vocalizes for the other party.
Call Screen allows AI to manage incoming calls, where it can inquire about the urgency of a call. Users receive text summaries of the dialogue, facilitating better engagement. Enhanced functionalities are available on the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro, enabling suggested replies powered by AI when toggled on.
Google’s Audio Emoji feature, which started to roll out last spring, further enriches calls by introducing playful sounds and animations related to specific emojis, adding a layer of expressiveness to communication. The initial release featured six emojis, including laughing and party emojis, each producing unique sounds.
Last year, Google also began a beta program for real-time scam detection within its Phone app. This AI-driven feature operates seamlessly in the background, assessing incoming calls for potential scams and alerting users with a vivid red notification. This alert allows users to terminate calls quickly, thus protecting their personal information from possible threats.
