Angel Reese Ignites Social Media Frenzy with Potential Sit-Out Threats

WNBA player Angel Reese has stirred significant discussion online after asserting that players may contemplate sitting out games to advocate for increased salaries during a recent podcast episode.

During the podcast, Reese, along with fellow player DiJonai Carrington, discussed the upcoming collective bargaining agreement for the WNBA.

“I need to be involved in these discussions because I’m hearing talk like, ‘If we don’t get what we want, we might not play,'” stated Reese.

Carrington responded, “That could indeed happen.”

Reese has voiced her concerns regarding her financial challenges in the past.

“The WNBA does not cover my expenses at all. I question if it even contributes to any of my bills,” Reese expressed.

The WNBA has faced scrutiny on social media as discussions emerge surrounding the potential for a player strike aimed at securing better financial compensation. Historically, the league has never recorded a profit and has relied on financial support from the NBA.

In a recent match against the Las Vegas Aces at Wintrust Arena, Reese, who plays for the Chicago Sky, also participated in a broader dialogue when she responded to conservative influencer AKA on X regarding a misleading claim that she demanded an NBA-equivalent salary.

“I never mentioned the NBA. We are committed to negotiating until we reach a fair agreement,” Reese clarified.

The post originally made by AKA was subsequently removed.

Reese secured a four-year rookie contract worth $324,383 before her inaugural WNBA season in 2024. In her first year, she earned under $75,000 and is expected to make a similar amount in 2025.

In October, Reese candidly shared on Instagram Live that her earnings were insufficient to cover her living expenses.

“I’m living beyond my means. My income from the WNBA doesn’t pay my bills at all,” she said. “In fact, considering my rent, I was calculating my WNBA salary, which is around $74,000?”

Reese disclosed that her rent is $8,000 monthly.

“If anyone thinks otherwise, that WNBA paycheck does not help me financially,” she clarified. “Does that even cover my car payment? … I wouldn’t even manage to afford a sandwich with that. It’s not sustainable for living.”

The WNBA players’ union decided to opt out of their existing collective bargaining agreement in October, ahead of its expiration date, which is two years away.

The present CBA regulations will apply through the 2025 season, offering both parties a year to negotiate a new deal.
