Angelina Jolie to Receive Performer Tribute at Gotham Awards
Although Angelina Jolie did not garner a nomination for a Gotham Award this year for her performance in “Maria,” she will still be a prominent figure at the upcoming event.
The Gotham Film & Media Institute officially announced that Jolie is set to receive the Performer Tribute for her role as the legendary opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larrain’s highly anticipated film “Maria.” The award presentation will take place during the 34th edition of The Gothams on Monday, December 2, 2024, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. A press release noted that this tribute recognizes Jolie’s powerful portrayal of Callas.
Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham, praised Jolie’s performance, stating, “Like the legendary figure she portrays, Angelina Jolie transcends mere performance to craft something extraordinary. Her interpretation captures both Maria Callas’s complexity as an artist and the cultural resonance that defines an icon. We are thrilled to celebrate what is truly one of Ms. Jolie’s career-defining performances in the final installment of Pablo Larrain’s magnificent trilogy.”
The nominees for this year’s Gotham Awards were selected by a carefully chosen jury of film critics and journalists. The performances were evaluated by a nominating committee that included Monica Castillo, Robert Daniels, Tim Grierson, Tomris Laffly, and Brian Tallerico. Both Castillo and Laffly are members of the New York Film Critics Circle, while Grierson is associated with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
“Maria,” which will debut on Netflix in December, tells the story of Maria Callas, one of the 20th century’s most iconic performers, as she retreats to Paris, reflecting on her glamorous yet tumultuous life. The film explores Callas’s reimagined final days as she grapples with her identity and legacy.
Directed by Larrain from a script by Steven Knight, “Maria” features notable contributions from cinematographer Ed Lachman and costume designer Massimo Cantini Parrini. The film also boasts a talented cast that includes Alba Rohrwacher, Pierfrancesco Favino, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Valeria Golino.
Having premiered at this year’s Venice Film Festival, “Maria” has also been showcased at the Telluride Film Festival, London Film Festival, and New York Film Festival, among others. Jolie is considered a leading contender for this year’s Best Actress category, with many anticipating her to receive a third Oscar nomination. She previously won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her work in “Girl, Interrupted.”
Prior to its Netflix release, “Maria” will have a limited theatrical premiere on November 27. The film will then be available to stream starting December 11.
This year’s Gotham Awards aim to honor the finest achievements in independent film, with notable contenders including “Anora,” “Nickel Boys,” and “I Saw the TV Glow.” Special tributes will also be awarded to Denis Villeneuve, the director of “Dune: Part Two,” as well as the ensemble casts of “The Piano Lesson” and “Sing Sing.” Further tribute announcements are expected before the ceremony on December 2.
