Geologist & D.S. Unveil Collaborative Album, “A Shaw Deal”
Geologist, known for his role as a multi-instrumentalist in the experimental band Animal Collective, has collaborated with musician Doug Shaw, formerly of White Magic and Highlife, to create a new album entitled A Shaw Deal. Set for release on January 31 via Drag City, this project represents a significant fusion of their musical talents and vision.
The first single from the album, titled “Route 9 Falls,” has been shared, accompanied by a visually striking music video created by Danny Perez, showcasing the duo’s dynamic performance.
The inception of A Shaw Deal traces back to a personal gesture. Geologist initially crafted the album as a birthday gift for his friend Doug Shaw, inspired by videos Shaw had posted of his improvisational guitar work on social media. Geologist took the recordings and processed the audio through his modular synthesizer, presenting Shaw with the unexpected result. “I didn’t set out to make a Geologist record, or even a record anyone but Doug would hear,” remarked Geologist. “I didn’t add any new sounds beyond what existed, and just fed the raw materials through myself as a possible channel. That way, I could say, ‘Happy birthday. You made a record, you just didn’t know it.’”
Geologist and Animal Collective have remained active in recent years, with the band releasing the album Isn’t It Now? last year. Their work continues to push boundaries while exploring new directions in sound and collaboration. For those interested, more insight can be found in the interview titled “The Strangest Trip: Animal Collective on the Legacy of Animal Collective.”
