Knoxville’s renowned avant-garde festival is set to return in March 2025.
Upcoming performances at the Big Ears Festival will feature notable artists such as Anohni and the Johnsons, Jessica Pratt, and Waxahatchee.
Taking place from March 27 to March 30 in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, the event boasts a diverse lineup that also includes Rufus Wainwright, Esperanza Spalding, Taj Mahal, Lankum, Yo La Tengo, Sun Ra Arkestra, Cassandra Jenkins, and Nels Cline of Wilco, among others.
Highlighting the festival will be the debut of Jonny Greenwood’s ambitious eight-hour pipe organ piece 133 Years of Reverb, performed by James McVinnie and Eliza McCarthy. Additionally, the Philip Glass Ensemble is slated to perform Glass’ celebrated 1974 composition, Music in Twelve Parts. The esteemed composer himself graced the festival stage in 2016 alongside Laurie Anderson.
The participation of Anohni and the Johnsons signifies a poignant milestone, as the band played a pivotal role in initiating the avant festival in 2009. Anohni recently revealed plans for a tour, marking her first in nearly ten years. Their latest album, My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross, hit the shelves in 2023.
Reflecting on her upcoming tour, Anohni expressed, “It is my first time touring since 2016, and first time with a band in 14 years. I feel like I want to sing for people, to affirm that these times are unprecedented, and to hold and express a sense of what’s really happening.”
