Anthony Mackie Discusses Challenges and Insights as New Captain America
In a recent interview with Deadline, Anthony Mackie, the star of the upcoming film “Captain America: Brave New World,” addressed his journey in Hollywood, as well as the significance of his role, originally held by Chris Evans.
Reflecting on his entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014, Mackie expressed surprise at taking on the mantle of Captain America. He acknowledged that iconic figures like Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. defined the franchise for him, making the thought of stepping into such a pivotal role unimaginable at first.

When prompted about the impact of race on his career trajectory, Mackie was clear in stating that his identity did not limit his opportunities in the industry. He asserted, “No, it was never the idea of me being Black that was in question or the hindrance. I’ve worked my entire career being Black.”
Mackie elaborated on his experiences, noting that he has always sought roles that reflect quality rather than focusing on the racial identity of the character. He exemplified this attitude by detailing his experience while working on the critically acclaimed war film “The Hurt Locker.” Initially, his character was intended for a White actor, but Mackie successfully convinced director Kathryn Bigelow that “war doesn’t know race,” emphasizing themes of brotherhood over racial distinctions.
Building on his career philosophy, Mackie stated, “I want to do great roles, not because they’re Black, but I want to do great roles because they’re great roles.” This reflects a broader aspiration for diversity in storytelling, which resonates with audiences across racial and cultural lines.
Moreover, Mackie’s comments during a promotional tour prompted considerable discussion, especially when he suggested that Captain America should not necessarily represent the concept of “America.” He articulated that the character embodies traits of honor, integrity, and trustworthiness, which should transcend a singular national identity.
Following notable backlash, Mackie took to social media to clarify his statements, emphasizing his pride in being American and the responsibility he feels in portraying such a revered character. He stated, “I have the utmost respect for those who serve and have served our country,” highlighting the universal appeal of Captain America’s values.
Mackie builds on his character, Sam Wilson, who has previously appeared in “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Captain America: Winter Soldier,” and “Captain America: Civil War.” As Falcon, his character exemplifies a close alliance with Steve Rogers, the original Captain America.
Expected to debut in theaters on February 14, 2025, “Captain America: Brave New World” promises to broaden the character’s legacy while presenting new challenges for Mackie as he steps into this iconic role.
