The mini-series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack dramatizes the harrowing events of the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight. The cast showcases a mixture of seasoned actors including Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Varma, Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra, Arvind Swamy, Dia Mirza, Pankaj Kapur, and Patralekhaa. Notably, this series will mark Anubhav Sinha’s debut in the OTT space, well-known for his impactful films such as Mulk, Thappad, Article 17, and Bheed. The series is set to premiere on Netflix India later this month.
The teaser, shared through Netflix’s official social media channels, begins with scenes of Indian passengers getting ready for their journey from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, en route to New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Vijay Varma portrays Sharan Dev, the pilot, who initially welcomes the passengers and provides them with general safety instructions. However, the calm atmosphere quickly shatters when five masked terrorists take control of the flight, threatening the safety of all onboard and orchestrating the hijacking.
The teaser further depicts the swift response of Indian government officials in New Delhi, played by Pankaj Kapur, Dia Mirza, Manoj Pahwa, and Naseeruddin Shah, as they mobilize to address the crisis. Passengers find themselves in grave danger as the hijacked plane is diverted to Kandahar, Afghanistan, where the Taliban was in power at the time.
The real-life incident that serves as the backdrop for this series involved Indian Airlines flight IC 814, taken hostage by five terrorists shortly after its departure from Kathmandu on December 24, 1999. The plane, carrying approximately 180 individuals, remained under duress for nearly eight days, during which it traversed multiple cities—including Amritsar, Lahore, and Dubai—before finally landing in Taliban-controlled territory in Kandahar.
