This notice was issued based on a complaint filed by lawyer Kamlesh Rawal from Surat on behalf of the Brahmin community.
Filmmaker and actor Anurag Kashyap has come under scrutiny following a controversial remark about the Brahmin community. In response to a complaint, the JMFC court in Surat has mandated that Kashyap appear for a hearing on May 7.
The notice was prompted by a complaint brought forth by lawyer Kamlesh Rawal, who represents the Brahmin community. Rawal emphasized that he provided the court with evidence, including Kashyap’s social media posts and his subsequent apology, which led to the issuance of the notice. It was specified that either Kashyap or his legal representative must be present on the specified date; failure to appear may result in a unilateral court decision.
Further elaborating on the situation, Rawal informed IANS, “On April 16, Kashyap made a derogatory statement regarding the Brahmin community. Despite a request from Aditya Dutta for him to refrain from such comments, Kashyap retorted with a dismissive remark about the community’s contributions. As a result, I have lodged a complaint in the Surat court, referencing various sections of the law. The court has confirmed receipt of my documentation and has issued a notice accordingly.”
In addition to the complaint in Surat, another accusation has surfaced against Kashyap in Mumbai, filed by RTI activist Atish Tiwari.
Recall that the filmmaker, known for his work on ‘Gangs of Wasseypur,’ had posted a provocative comment saying, “Brahmin pe main m*******a..koi problem (I’ll pee on the Brahmins…any problem)?” This comment was reportedly in reaction to a statement claiming, “Brahmins are your father.”
The backlash on social media was swift and severe, with many users condemning his remarks.
Subsequently, Kashyap issued a statement on social media, expressing regret not for his original comment but for how it was interpreted, stating, “This is my apology, not for my post but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred. No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends, and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar (cultural values).”
