Apple Releases Critical iOS and iPadOS Security Updates
On Tuesday, Apple rolled out unscheduled updates for both iOS 18.3.2 and iPadOS 18.3.2 aimed at addressing a significant software vulnerability while enhancing device security. The incremental updates are applicable to various models, including the iPhone XS and newer, all versions of the iPad Pro starting from the 12.9-inch 3rd generation, and models such as the iPad Air from the 3rd generation onward, the iPad 7th generation and later, as well as the iPad mini from the 5th generation onward.
This update targets CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) 2025-24201, a software flaw that could potentially allow “maliciously crafted” web content to escape its designated Web Content sandbox. Such sandboxing is crucial as it prevents harmful websites from accessing sensitive data or interfering with the device’s operating system. If exploited, this vulnerability might enable malicious code to steal personal information, deploy malware, or engage in other harmful activities that could jeopardize the user’s security.
Apple has acknowledged that this critical vulnerability has already been utilized in “extremely sophisticated” attacks focused on certain targeted individuals, particularly on versions prior to iOS 17.2. The company concluded its statement by noting that the update addressed an out-of-bounds write issue through improved checks designed to thwart unauthorized actions.
To apply the update, users are advised to navigate to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the provided instructions.
Additionally, participants in the iOS 18 beta program received the release of iOS 18.4 beta 3. This update includes bug fixes and performance enhancements, which are particularly beneficial for those using beta software on their primary devices. While the beta is not expected to introduce significant new features, one noted change is the renaming of a menu option in the Apple Wallet to ‘Preauthorized Payments.’
The revised feature page will showcase merchants authorized to charge users’ Apple Pay payment methods for subscriptions, auto reloading, billing, and more. It may also allow recurring or deferred checkouts through participating websites and apps using Apple Pay for preauthorized payments. Users in the beta program can install iOS 18.4 beta 3 by going to Settings > General > Software Update and following the instructions.
