Apple Music has appointed Ole Obermann and Rachel Newman as its new co-heads, according to a report from Billboard.
The announcement was initially made by Music Business Worldwide.
Obermann recently parted ways with ByteDance, where he was the global head of music business development for over five years. He began his tenure with the company as the vice president and global head of music at TikTok. Prior to this, he held significant roles within the music industry, serving as chief digital officer and executive vice president at Warner Music Group and engaging in critical licensing negotiations at Sony Music with major platforms like Spotify and YouTube. His leadership at TikTok coincided with the platform’s emergence as a significant music discovery tool, radically transforming how music is consumed and marketed. This period also included challenges with record labels, highlighted by a protracted negotiation with Universal Music Group that concluded with a licensing agreement last May. Following his departure, Tracy Gardner took over his position at ByteDance.
Rachel Newman, on the other hand, brings over 16 years of experience at Apple Music, having most recently served as the global head of content and editorial. This year, she earned a spot on Billboard‘s Women in Music roster, acknowledging her influential contributions alongside her peers. In a statement to Billboard, Newman shared, “We have really leaned into one of our most core attributes as a company this past year: weaving the humanities into everything we do.”
Apple Music continues to strengthen its position within the industry, highlighted by its long-term sponsorship of the Super Bowl halftime show, as well as initiatives like the 100 Best Albums editorial project and the Apple Music Live series, which showcases live performances from artists such as Björk, SZA, Camila Cabello, Jennifer Lopez, and Kacey Musgraves.
