Apple Set to Redesign Software for iPhone and iPad
Recent reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman indicate that Apple is planning a significant overhaul of the software that powers both the iPhone and iPad. This update will be reflected in the upcoming iOS and iPadOS versions, with a concerted effort to standardize the design across various devices.
According to insights from insiders, the redesign aims to create a more uniform user interface (UI), showcasing refreshed icons, system buttons, windows, menus, and applications. Users can expect to see these changes roll out later in the year, most likely coinciding with the launch of iOS 19 and iPadOS 19 in September, alongside the introduction of the iPhone 17 series.
The new operating system design is reportedly inspired by the software used in Apple’s Vision Pro mixed reality headset, which suggests a shift towards incorporating more rounded elements and a user-friendly navigation experience. Historically, iOS has been celebrated for its intuitive usability compared to competitors like Android, and this update may further streamline interactions, enhancing the overall experience for Apple users.
Motivation Behind the Changes
The push for such a transformative update is primarily driven by economic factors rather than advancements in artificial intelligence. With iPhone sales experiencing a decline, Apple recognizes the need to invigorate interest in its flagship product. The sales of iPhones play a critical role in driving revenue for apps and additional services like Apple Music and Apple News+, as well as influencing purchases of related devices such as the Apple Watch.
Internally, iOS 19 has been code-named “Lucky,” marking the most substantial transformation since iOS 7, launched in 2013. The redesign in iOS 7 notably moved away from skeuomorphism—a design style aimed at imitating real-world objects in digital form.
For instance, previous iterations of iOS featured a YouTube icon resembling a vintage television set, while the Notes app mimicked a notepad, and the Calendar app echoed a physical calendar layout.
Upcoming Features and Innovations
The tech community eagerly anticipates a preview of iOS 19 and iPadOS 19, which is expected to take place in June at the next WWDC developers conference. Gurman’s insights suggest that Apple will also introduce a new architecture for Siri at this event. The anticipated changes to Siri could be substantial, with features like “Personal Siri,” expected to be rolled out alongside iOS 19.4 in June 2026. This upgraded Siri could potentially provide personalized assistance by sifting through a user’s emails and messages to offer contextual answers, such as when to pick up a family member from the airport.
