macOS Sequoia Update Causes Issues for Third-Party Security Tools
On Monday, Apple released the stable version of its latest operating system, macOS 15, also referred to as macOS Sequoia. While the update is expected to enhance user experience, it has reportedly introduced significant problems, particularly affecting third-party security applications. These complications seem to revolve around various enterprise-grade security tools from companies such as Microsoft and CrowdStrike, raising concerns about the implications for business users who rely on Mac devices.
According to TechCrunch, users have reported that the update disrupts the proper functioning of security tools developed by various firms, including CrowdStrike and SentinelOne. Discussions in a specific Mac-focused Slack channel highlight a flurry of complaints from users experiencing these issues post-update.
Further investigation by Gadgets 360 revealed several discussions on Reddit, where users expressed frustration over the non-operational security applications following the macOS upgrade. It appears that some users attribute the malfunctioning tools to various glitches associated with the new operating system.
One Reddit user noted, “Amazing it isn’t supported yet. Betas have been available for a while, dev builds even earlier – I assume they have a dev account. Unless something is really, really broken on Apple’s side – there isn’t an excuse.” This sentiment reflects a growing frustration regarding the lack of compatibility following what should have been a well-prepared update.
The primary concern stemming from this situation is the reliance many organizations have on Mac devices, leaving them vulnerable if their security systems are compromised. A sales engineer from CrowdStrike mentioned in the Slack channel that despite their efforts, support for the affected security tools would not be available immediately upon launching macOS Sequoia. As of now, it remains uncertain whether any temporary solutions exist for the functionality issues.
Additionally, another user on Reddit warned that problems with macOS Sequoia are extending beyond security tools, impacting a broad range of applications. This user reported significant issues on an M1 Max-powered MacBook Pro, mentioning “almost 90 percent of the apps were suffering from issues.” He outlined connectivity problems where he was unable to access the internet despite being able to connect to a personal hotspot.
Meanwhile, security researcher Will Dormann raised concerns on Mastodon about facing DNS issues with multiple applications and problems related to firewall settings on his device. As of now, Apple has not provided any official statement about the resolution timeline for these identified issues, leaving users in a state of uncertainty.
