Free Entry to National Parks on April 19, 2025
The National Park Service is offering visitors free entry on April 19, 2025.
April 19 marks the beginning of National Park Week, a time dedicated to celebrating the beauty and importance of our natural landscapes, featuring a range of special programs and activities. Notably, Yellowstone National Park has been distinguished as the premier park in the United States according to readers of Travel + Leisure.
Those planning an outdoor adventure this month will find a great opportunity to save on expenses.
Every April, the National Park Service observes National Park Week with a variety of daily events and programming. This year’s celebration commences on April 19, coinciding with a day of free admission to most national parks. National Park Week runs from April 19 to April 27.
The theme for this year’s National Park Week is “National Park Playlist.” This playful theme includes a retro-inspired logo resembling a vinyl record and highlights different musical connections for each day of the week. April 19 is particularly noteworthy, as it also celebrates National Junior Ranger Day. On this day, families are encouraged to engage in park activities tailored for children, who can earn a special Junior Ranger badge as part of the experience.
Changes Ahead for Summer Visitors Due to NPS Layoffs
Recent staffing changes within the National Park Service (NPS) have led to uncertainties for travelers regarding what to expect this summer when visiting these cherished destinations.
According to the NPS, “The National Park Service protects our nation’s greatest treasures and tells our shared stories,” emphasizing the significance of National Park Week.
Visitors should note that while entry to the parks will be free on April 19, this only covers general admission. Additional costs may apply for reservation fees or timed entry passes, which are sometimes required to manage visitor capacity. Throughout the year, the National Park Service designates several days for free entry, including August 4, which commemorates the signing of the Great American Outdoors Act, and September 27, celebrated as National Public Lands Day.
Travelers seeking inspiration for their park visits can look to recent rankings for guidance. In the 2024 World’s Best Awards, T+L readers rated Yellowstone National Park as the top park in the country. Additionally, hiking website and app AllTrails has compiled a list of the highest-rated national parks based on user reviews and evaluations. Topping the list is Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, followed closely by Zion National Park and Mount Rainier National Park in Washington.
