AR Rahman Reflects on Friendships Amidst a Celebrated Career
Renowned composer AR Rahman has shared insights about his life as he approaches 30 years in the Hindi film music industry, a journey that commenced with the iconic film Rangeela in 1995. Over the decades, Rahman has garnered numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan, six National Film Awards, two Academy Awards, two Grammy Awards, a BAFTA Award, and a Golden Globe Award. His collaborations span an impressive roster of artists both in India and globally.
In a recent exclusive interview, Rahman candidly expressed a sense of solitude in his life, particularly concerning friendships. “While I appreciate the connections I’ve formed throughout my career, I find myself falling short in maintaining friendships,” he disclosed. Despite claiming to have ample time, he often dives deeper into his work, noting that his drive for excellence leads him to extend his hours beyond what is necessary. He shares, “If I know a song will take eight hours to complete, I often go beyond that. My philosophy revolves around investing more time for enhanced quality and satisfaction in my art.”
Explaining his dedication to music, Rahman likened his immersion in work to a kind of addiction, stating, “Every time I engage with a project, I feel a compelling urge to excel further and explore new creative realms. Unfortunately, this intense focus means that years can pass by unnoticed.” He admitted that even meetings with close collaborators like Mani Ratnam and Imtiaz Ali have become infrequent due to his relentless pursuit of new ideas and projects.
Rahman emphasized that genuine friendships shouldn’t equate to surrounding oneself with mere yes-men. Despite having a small circle, he expressed gratitude towards colleagues who extended their support during his recent hospitalization for neck pain. “I cherish my friends deeply. Their concern and messages during my time in the hospital were heartwarming,” he explained, acknowledging the kindness he received from various singers and directors.
Discussing connections in Hollywood, Rahman mentioned a composer friend from Finland and another friend, an acting coach named Bernard Hiller, who often welcomed him into exclusive events. He shared, “They understand my journey and often encourage me to push my limits, even suggesting that I explore directing.” Reflecting on their encouragement, he mused, “Perhaps they see potential in me that I haven’t yet fully realized.”
When asked how he maintains these vital friendships, Rahman commented, “I honor them by including them in my prayers, which is how I celebrate the bonds we share.” As he prepares for his upcoming Wonderment Tour in Mumbai this May, Rahman’s reflections serve as a reminder of the balance between a demanding career and personal connections.
