Arsenal has finalized a permanent transfer for United States defender Jenna Nighswonger from Gotham FC, marking a significant move on transfer deadline day. The deal is reported to be valued at £80,500, making Nighswonger the first addition to the Arsenal squad in the January transfer window.
At just 24 years old, Nighswonger has already made an impressive 18 appearances for the USA national team. She began her professional journey with Gothams FC after joining from LA Galaxy in 2023, where she demonstrated her capabilities and potential on the field.
Expressing her excitement about the transfer, Nighswonger stated, “I’m so happy to be here. I’ve always wanted to play in England and joining such a historic football club is a dream come true. I want to win trophies with this club and help the team in any way possible. It’s an incredible feeling to be able to call myself an Arsenal player and I can’t wait to get started.”
This transfer also marks a new chapter for Arsenal under the management of Renee Slegers, who is steering the club’s strategy with a focus on blending fresh talent with the current roster. As part of their January approach, Arsenal is concentrating on securing loan opportunities for younger players to gain experience.
“Jenna has had a great trajectory in the game and we’re delighted to bring her to Arsenal,” Slegers commented on the new signing. “Despite being only 24, she plays with great maturity and presence and knows what it takes to compete to win on the biggest stages at both domestic and national team level.”
