Hayley Erbert Returns to the Dance Floor After Health Crisis
Hayley Erbert is set to make her return to the dance floor on Dancing With the Stars, and her husband, Derek Hough, is reflecting on her serious health challenges. Erbert experienced a cranial hematoma due to a ruptured blood vessel on December 6, 2023, while in Washington D.C. during their Symphony of Dance tour.
In a preview video that will air prior to their performance, Hough recounts, “Everything changed in an instant with devastating news.” He shares, “I was performing on stage, and she was supposed to join me. The stage manager approached to inform me that she wasn’t coming on. It turned out she was having full seizures backstage and was in critical condition. It’s difficult to articulate the level of fear we felt in that moment.”
Hough describes the urgency of the situation, stating, “We rushed her to the hospital — she was still in her dance costume. The doctor informed me that she had a severe brain bleed and required immediate surgery. He told me she might not survive, and even if she did, there was a chance she wouldn’t be the same.”
Ultimately, Erbert underwent a vital emergency craniectomy. Hough later communicated via Instagram that Erbert would need a follow-up procedure to perform a cranioplasty, which involved replacing a significant part of her skull. Weeks later, he shared updates on her recovery journey, confirming that she was on the path to healing.
In a heartfelt Instagram video shared in February, Erbert opened up about her recovery. “I have good days and bad days, both emotionally and physically, but I am improving every day,” she said, expressing gratitude for her progress.
Returning to Dancing With the Stars, Erbert will participate as part of the show’s “Dedication Night” episode. The couple, who celebrated their first wedding anniversary in August, plans to deliver a touching performance to an acoustic rendition of Benson Boone’s song “Beautiful Things,” as announced by ABC.
In a promotional video, Hough emphasized the significance of their upcoming performance, calling it “a very special performance with my beautiful wife.” He expressed his excitement, saying, “I can’t wait for this night. It promises to be deeply moving, and I hope everyone will join us.”
