Recently, Asmongold faced significant backlash after his comments about Nazi book burnings, wherein he clarified that Nazis primarily targeted Jewish texts in Hebrew rather than gender-focused literature. This statement prompted an intense wave of criticism from viewers and fellow streamers, who accused him of being anti-Semitic and attempting to downplay the seriousness of the Nazi regime.
The criticism largely emanated from platforms like X and Twitch, where political streamer Gremloe responded to Asmongold’s remarks. He highlighted that the Nazis also burned institutes related to sexology and held staunch anti-gender political views, while simultaneously engaging in rampant anti-Semitism. Additionally, Gremloe pointed out that Asmongold’s chat allegedly contained phrases like “W Nazis;” however, he neglected to mention that Asmongold’s moderation team acted firmly, banning anyone who posted these messages.
Asmongold countered Gremloe’s critiques during a February 16 video stream, accusing him of promoting violence against political adversaries. He claimed that Gremloe is not only a instigator of violence towards other streamers but is also encouraging violent actions against people more broadly. Describing the situation as a concerted effort to misrepresent his statements, Asmongold called for Gremloe to be penalized for his inflammatory comments.
Asmongold is one of Twitch’s leading figures and often finds himself embroiled in controversy. Prominent political streamer Hasanabi also weighed in, expressing disbelief over what he perceives as acceptable viewpoints within right-wing discourse, suggesting that Asmongold’s arguments lack depth and rationale. Hasanabi humorously dubbed him the “number one political streamer” on the platform.
In response, Asmongold highlighted that Hasanabi previously hosted someone labeled as a terrorist on his stream and criticized him for not adequately addressing the harassment targeting Ethan Klein from Hasanabi’s audience, which escalated to anti-Semitic slurs. Asmongold remarked that Hasanabi’s failure to moderate his chat stands in stark contrast to his own management of negative behavior in his community.
The discussion took another turn when Asmongold’s editor chimed in, supporting his claims that all individuals who disseminated hateful comments during his streams were promptly banned, unlike in Hasanabi’s case, where such offenders remained unpunished and active within the community.
As the political landscape in streaming becomes increasingly charged, figures like Asmongold—a primarily gaming content creator—often find themselves embroiled in discussions on broader American and global issues. His forays into political commentary have led to frequent disagreements with other creators, including Hasanabi, contributing to an environment where such clashes are becoming routine and even resulting in penalties for some participants.
