Atari has entered into a collaboration with B3 that will see several classic games, beginning with the iconic Pong, migrate to the blockchain for the first time.
Pong, a landmark title in the history of gaming, set the foundation for the industry, symbolizing a cultural shift that resonates with gamers across various generations. By transitioning these beloved classics to the blockchain via B3, Atari is uniting nostalgia with modern technological advancements.
B3, developed by former Coinbase employees, introduces a Layer 3 open gaming ecosystem designed to rejuvenate the gaming experience. This platform aims to make gaming more enjoyable and accessible.
According to the companies involved, B3’s infrastructure enables game studios and developers of all sizes to create custom gamechains, participate in revenue sharing, and seamlessly scale their titles across different chains and networks.
Other notable games available on B3 include Heli Attack, Parallel, Mighty Action Heroes, GOAT Gaming, and SuperGaming, which can all be explored here.
Since its inception, B3 has made significant strides, onboarding over six million wallets and executing more than 200 million transactions. Players benefit from the ease of accessing games across multiple chains with a single login, which alleviates the typical complexities linked with blockchain gaming. The platform has amassed more than 140,000 daily active users, reflecting a strong demand for accessible and enjoyable gaming experiences centered around fun.
Tyler Drewitz, head of special projects and director at Atari X, expressed Atari’s longstanding role as an innovator in gaming in a conversation with GamesBeat.
“Transitioning our classic titles onto the blockchain signifies a pivotal evolution for us. It’s about going beyond fleeting trends; it’s about acknowledging the immense possibilities that blockchain technology offers in terms of ownership and community engagement that support our vision for gaming’s future,” Drewitz remarked. “Our games have always had a community essence; blockchain allows players to own their experiences in a tangible way, empowering them to expand and enhance the worlds we created.”
Drewitz highlighted the selection of B3 as a partner due to its comprehensive understanding of gaming history combined with the prospects of blockchain technology.
“B3 demonstrated a vision that honors our classic games while augmenting them through its open gaming framework. Their focus on creating real value rather than merely tokenizing assets helped us realize that blockchain gaming is about more than speculation; it’s about opening new avenues for play, creativity, and community. This partnership allows us to respect our legacy while pursuing innovation, which is precisely the balance we aimed for,” Drewitz stated.
Regarding the future of gaming, Drewitz noted that while nostalgia holds significant power, it alone cannot ensure the longevity of games.
“We envision a future for gaming that is increasingly community-oriented and open. By transitioning Atari classics to the blockchain, we are welcoming a new generation of creators to reimagine these iconic games in an open-source, remixable format. This approach fosters preservation through evolution, which is greatly inspiring,” Drewitz explained.
He emphasized, “One of the most remarkable outcomes of bringing Atari games onto the blockchain is the elimination of conventional barriers between developer and player. When titles like Pong or Asteroids are made available on the blockchain, we’re not solely preserving the history of gaming— we’re inviting everyone to take part in its progression. Consider the possibilities that could arise when thousands of imaginative individuals augment these foundational games, introducing new elements while retaining the core aspects that endeared them to players.”
