Department of Justice Initiates Legal Action Against Illinois Over Immigration Enforcement
In a robust statement on national immigration policy, Attorney General Pam Bondi has promised to address what she describes as the “weaponization” of government and a perceived “two-tiered” justice system. Her remarks followed a federal lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) against the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago, alongside their leaders, Governor J.B. Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson. The lawsuit accuses these officials of hindering federal enforcement of immigration law.
During her first interview as the 87th Attorney General of the United States on “Hannity,” Bondi emphasized a return to the primary purpose of government and law enforcement: to remove violent offenders from communities and uphold public safety. She asserted, “We’re going to get back to the core function of what our government, our law enforcement, was intended to do: prosecute violent criminals and get them off our streets.”
The lawsuit outlines concerns that the state and city have not only poorly enforced federal immigration laws but have actively obstructed their enforcement over several years. Bondi referenced the negative implications of these actions, stating that such policies have led to the release of numerous individuals who could have been detained for removal from the United States.

Criticizing the priorities of state and local officials, Bondi remarked, “We’re choosing illegal aliens over the safety and security of our own citizens.” She warned that non-compliance with federal laws would result in punitive actions, saying, “If you don’t comply with federal law, you’re going to be next.”
This legal move appears to align with Bondi’s recent decision to suspend federal funding to sanctuary cities until a thorough review can be conducted. In her conversation with Fox News host Sean Hannity, she indicated that the DOJ is coordinating efforts with the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies to ensure legal action is taken against gang members and drug traffickers.

Emphasizing integrity in the DOJ’s work, Bondi, the former attorney general of Florida, committed to restoring fairness to the department under President Donald Trump. She stated, “You know, you have to follow the ethical standards of being a prosecutor and you have to follow the law,” reinforcing her focus on strict adherence to legal principles and procedural integrity.
Bondi concluded her remarks by asserting that the “weaponization” of government had come to an end with Trump’s administration, a sentiment echoed by his supporters who credit his election with a significant mandate from the public.
