Audra McDonald and Jake Gyllenhaal Discuss Their Broadway Performances
In a recent episode of Variety’s Broadway edition of Actors on Actors, performers Audra McDonald and Jake Gyllenhaal engaged in a thought-provoking conversation about their current theatrical roles. McDonald is taking on the challenging character of Mama Rose in Gypsy, while Gyllenhaal portrays Iago in Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, Othello. Throughout their discourse, they highlighted the significance of vocal warm-ups and voice training, even in non-musical performances.
McDonald candidly reflected on her past aversion to vocal warm-ups, admitting, “During my performance in Ohio State Murders, I neglected to prepare my voice as I should have, which impacted my delivery.” This underscores a common challenge many actors face regarding voice care and preparedness.
Discussing the intensity of her current role, McDonald described Gypsy as her most arduous project to date. “Once I finish this role, there’s a good chance I will need to rest for a year… This production has pushed me to my limits,” she remarked, highlighting the demanding nature of the character of Mama Rose.
The duo’s conversation transitioned to the work of Stephen Sondheim, a shared inspiration in their careers. McDonald lauded Gyllenhaal’s portrayal of George in the 2017 revival of Sunday in the Park with George, emphasizing Sondheim’s unique ability to encapsulate complex emotions through his writing. “His work is akin to a language of its own—athletic and poetic,” she noted, revealing her emotional connection to Sondheim’s music.
Gyllenhaal further expounded on the analytical depth required for performances in Sondheim’s shows, stating, “[Sondheim’s] work demands a deep understanding of character motivations and nuanced decision-making, even before the music comes into play.” This perspective reveals the collaborative nature of theatre, where script and performance intertwine to create powerful storytelling.
Currently, Gyllenhaal’s Othello is enjoying a limited engagement at the Ethel Barrymore Theater, concluding its run on Sunday, June 8. Meanwhile, McDonald continues her captivating performance in Gypsy at the Majestic Theatre.
The Actors on Actors series is an annual highlight during the awards season, bringing together prominent stars from both film and theatre for in-depth discussions about their work, career insights, award considerations, and other engaging topics.
