Residents in the Augusta area are often engaged in selling items related to the Masters Tournament, but one individual’s actions crossed legal boundaries.
Richard Globensky, aged 40 and from Evans, received a federal prison sentence after he admitted to transporting and selling stolen items acquired through his employment at the Augusta National Golf Club. Here are the details of his case:
What Were Richard Globensky’s Actions?
Globensky confessed as part of a plea agreement that he misappropriated goods and memorabilia from 2009 to 2022 while working as a warehouse assistant at the club, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. His theft included items like Masters apparel, hats, watches, and significantly, three Green Jackets awarded to past champions. He sold these items for over $5 million to a broker based in Florida, who then resold them at much higher prices.
Details of the Stolen Green Jackets
The Green Jackets are prestigious awards given to winners of the Masters Tournament, and among the stolen items were jackets from legends Arnold Palmer, Gene Sarazen, and Ben Hogan.
Sarazen won one of the earliest Tournaments in 1935, while Hogan claimed victories in 1951 and 1953. Palmer was a champion multiple times, winning the tournament in 1958, 1960, 1962, and 1964.
How Did He Carry Out the Thefts?
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, over the last six years of his operation, Globensky spent nearly $600,000 on a custom-built residence in Georgia, invested over $370,000 in five vehicles and a motorboat, and allocated more than $160,000 on vacations to Walt Disney-themed destinations, along with $32,000 spent on Louis Vuitton products.
“The profits Globensky amassed allowed him and his spouse to maintain a lifestyle well beyond their financial means,” stated Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Hayes in the government’s sentencing memorandum. “His spending habits indicate that greed was likely the primary driver behind his criminal actions.”
Sentencing Outcome for Richard Globensky
As a consequence for his crimes, Globensky was sentenced to one year in prison and ordered to pay restitution amounting to $3,448,842 to Augusta National.
