Lottie Woad Tied for Lead at Augusta National Women’s Amateur
England’s Lottie Woad has claimed a spot at the top of the leaderboard at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur after carding a score of 70 in the second round. She is now tied at nine-under-par with Kiara Romero, setting the stage for an exciting final round.
A junior at Florida State University and currently the top-ranked player in the women’s amateur category, Woad is seeking to defend her title after winning this prestigious event the previous year. Her ambition is to become the first player to win back-to-back Augusta National Women’s Amateur titles.
This week, all competitors will participate in a practice round on the renowned Augusta National course on Friday. Following that, the top 30 players and ties who made the cut will advance to compete in the final round on Saturday.
“I have the advantage of experience from last year regarding the crucial 48 hours between rounds,” Woad commented. “I see it as a positive going forward.”
Woad acknowledged her strategic approach as the tournament progresses: “Knowing I would be starting earlier than Megha [Ganne, who led after the first round], I aimed to start strong with a few birdies to close the gap, which I successfully did.”
Reflecting on her past performance, Woad noted, “Last year, I held the lead but fell behind. If a similar situation arises this time, I draw comfort from having overcome it before. Those experiences are valuable.” She also mentioned the increased difficulty of the pin placements this year, prompting her to adopt a more patient strategy during her round.
Meanwhile, Romero encountered challenges during her round, experiencing a double bogey on the fourth hole followed by a bogey on the fifth. Nonetheless, she bounced back with three consecutive birdies, finishing the day with a score of 68. “I feel a greater control over my mental game,” she stated. “Despite the setbacks, I remained composed and concluded strongly. This reflects the growth in my approach compared to last year.”
Romero plans to analyze the course further ahead of the final round to fine-tune her game plan. With several players closely trailing the leaders, the competition is set to intensify.
Not far behind the lead, Spain’s Carla Bernat Escuder is positioned one shot back, alongside Andre Revuelta and Megha Ganne. Although Ganne’s second-round score of 73 was significantly higher than her opening score, she remains very much in contention for the title.
