Megha Ganne Sets Record at Augusta National Women’s Amateur
In a remarkable display of skill, Megha Ganne established a new record at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur (ANWA) on Wednesday, posting a remarkable nine-under-par 63 at Champions Retreat. This stellar performance has placed her ahead of the competition, giving her a two-stroke advantage over last year’s champion, Lottie Woad.
The scores during this tournament were notably lower than in past events at Champions Retreat, where the initial rounds are contested before the top 30 players advance to the final round at the iconic Augusta National, which will host the Masters in the coming week.
Starting on the back nine, Ganne, a junior at Stanford University, began her round with an impressive trio of consecutive birdies. Her round featured no bogeys, highlighted by a crucial 18-foot par-saving putt on the fifth hole, her 14th of the day. The only blemish on her card came from a three-putt on the par-five ninth hole.
“Believe it or not, I had a dream last night that I shot 61,” Ganne shared during her post-round interview on Golf Channel. “I didn’t tell anyone. I didn’t want to set bad omens in the air.”
Ganne’s success continued as she notched four birdies on the back nine. Despite narrowly missing a birdie opportunity on the par-five 14th, she rebounded with an impressive 45-foot birdie putt on the 15th hole.
Competing in a field of 71 players, Ganne was not the only one to shine. Kiara Romero, Farah O’Keefe, and Amanda Sambach all finished with commendable scores of 67. In total, 29 participants managed to break par, while reigning US Women’s Amateur champion Rianne Malixi had to withdraw due to a back injury.
This marks Ganne’s fifth appearance at the ANWA, and she has reached the final round in each of the past two years. Acknowledging the challenges still ahead, she expressed a balanced perspective on her achievements. “Enjoy today and take the rest of the week as it comes,” she said, adding, “But today was pretty special.”
