Auto Legends, a Web3 game centered around social drag racing, has attracted an additional $1 million investment from the Base Ecosystem Fund, managed by Coinbase Ventures, as part of a larger funding round totaling $9 million.
This funding round also includes contributions from other notable investors such as Operating Group and Draper Dragon.
The goal of Auto Legends is to mirror the diverse experiences of car enthusiasts in real life, allowing players to explore various avenues that contribute to becoming a notable figure in automotive culture. This includes activities such as racing, collecting vehicles, managing teams, hosting tournaments, offering tuning services, and even operating car dealerships.
The infusion of capital not only accelerates the game’s development but also supports Auto Legends’ aim to provide a thrilling racing experience that encapsulates the intricate passion associated with car culture.
With a team comprised of industry veterans from leading gaming companies who have previously developed successful racing franchises enjoyed by over 65 million players, Auto Legends is positioned to transform the Web3 gaming landscape with a high-quality AAA experience. This funding reinforces confidence in the project’s vision, which seeks to merge conventional racing game mechanics with blockchain-supported ownership.
“We are proud to support a team that has consistently delivered world-class racing titles, capturing the imagination of Web3 gaming, and we look forward to Auto Legends expanding its reach on Base,” stated Shan Aggarwal, VP of Corporate and Business Development Ventures at Coinbase.
In a strategic move to enhance its development efforts, Auto Legends has welcomed Scott Probin, an industry veteran with over 35 years in AAA game production. Probin’s responsibilities will include improving gameplay, facilitating the onboarding of Web2 players, and enhancing the game’s player-owned economy.
Probin has an impressive background, having recently worked on Off The Grid, a prominent Web3 shooter, and has contributed to well-known sports and racing franchises including Need for Speed and For Honor.
“Scott’s extensive expertise in AAA game development, along with his lifelong passion for automotive and racing games, will help us craft a genuine experience that resonates with car enthusiasts and racing fans alike,” said Peter Pham, CEO of Auto Legends. “We’re dedicated to creating a unique gaming experience that is accessible, competitive, and rewarding for all players, whether they hail from Web2 or Web3.”
The Backstory
Auto Legends is spearheaded by Autoverse Studios, which is under the leadership of executive chairman Justin Choice, a former Cie Games founder known for popular titles like Car Town and Racing Rivals. Choice has reunited a team of former colleagues to embark on developing another successful mobile racing franchise.
The co-founders have gathered a skilled group from leading companies such as Cie Games, Glu Mobile, Riot Games, Xbox, EA, Ubisoft, and Scopely, all of which have strong backgrounds in creating racing games. The previous titles from Cie Games—Nitto 1320 Legends, Car Town, and Racing Rivals—collectively attracted 140 million players and topped the charts as leading auto games on various platforms.
The game emphasizes a social, authentic, and competitive vehicle ownership experience, allowing players to acquire cars that reflect their real-world production availability. Players can customize and tune their vehicles with realistic aftermarket components, showcase their personalized cars in social meet-ups, and compete against others for prizes, status, or even risk their vehicles in high-stakes “pink slip” races.
Set initially in Southern California, the game offers players various racing formats, enabling them to earn experience points (PVE), attract fans (PVP), accumulate cash, gain leaderboard positions, and access rare car parts.
As players advance in the game, they can unlock enhanced performance shops, garages for their vehicle collections, new racing environments, and additional gameplay features. Progressive ranking allows players to upgrade their cars and expand their garages with new vehicles.
Beta Access and Inaugural NFT Mint
In conjunction with the recent funding, Auto Legends is gearing up for its inaugural NFT mint, offering early supporters a unique opportunity to own exclusive in-game cars prior to the game’s official release. This mint will introduce limited-edition digital collectibles, which players can utilize within the game’s competitive framework.
