Deb Mukerji: A Landmark Figure in Bollywood’s History
Ayan Mukerji recently held a prayer meeting for his late father, Deb Mukerji, a prominent figure in Bollywood’s golden age, which has evoked a wave of condolences across the film industry. The event saw an impressive turnout from Bollywood luminaries, including Ranbir Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Anupam Kher, Sham Kaushal, and Aditya Roy Kapur.
During the prayer meet, Ayan emphasized the private nature of the gathering, requesting the media to allow the family space during this emotional time. He addressed the paparazzi candidly, stating, “I just felt like there would be a lot of commotion inside. It’s a prayer meet—it’s quite personal. If you feel you are not getting better shots, then I am sorry, but I think, for us, this will be a better arrangement today.”
He continued, “We didn’t have that kind of space here. There will be some shlokas inside. If there are too many photographers, then it will get very noisy. So please understand a little bit for today. I understand, but you guys also understand a bit today. This is a very personal event for us. It’s not like Durga Puja. It’s very different for us today. We will share some visuals with you later. Thank you.”
Deb Mukerji passed away on March 14, leaving behind a legacy enriched by numerous performances from the 1960s through the 1990s. Following his passing, both Kajol and Tanishaa Mukerji, actresses and his nieces, expressed their devotion through touching tributes, highlighting the profound impact he had on their lives.
Known for his roles in iconic films like Lal Patthar (1971), Adhikar (1971), and Ek Bar Mooskura Do (1972), Deb’s contributions to cinema continued with later works such as King Uncle (1993) and Kaminey (2009), which showcased his enduring presence in the industry.
In addition to acting, Deb Mukerji was instrumental in organizing the North Bombay Sarvajanik Durga Puja Pandal, an annual event that has become a cornerstone of large-scale celebrations in Mumbai, drawing Bollywood’s elite year after year.
His funeral service was held at the Pawan Hans Crematorium in Vile Parle, Mumbai, attended by family members and close friends, marking a final farewell to a cherished figure in Indian cinema.
