Recent investigations into the salaries of municipal leaders in Metro Vancouver have uncovered some staggering compensation figures. Mayors in the region are reportedly earning well over $300,000 annually, thanks to a combination of their base salaries and additional stipends for roles on various regional boards.
Among these leaders, Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie has drawn attention for his impressive salary of $362,000, making him the second-highest-paid mayor in the region. When approached for comment by Global News, Brodie declined to discuss his compensation.
Richmond Councillor Kash Heed voiced his concerns, stating, “This is absolutely ridiculous. He’s an elected official and should answer to the people of Richmond and those contributing their tax dollars toward his remuneration.”
Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley takes the lead as the highest-paid mayor, boasting a compensation package approaching $400,000. In an interview, Hurley defended his salary, asserting that he works diligently in his dual role as mayor and chair of Metro Vancouver.
“I certainly put in a lot of hours to earn that type of money,” Hurley remarked, adding that he strives to perform at his best every day. When pressed about specific figures regarding his pay, he responded, “I don’t believe so. But I couldn’t tell you, to be honest.”
Many Richmond residents have expressed frustration regarding the lack of transparency surrounding Mayor Brodie’s pay, according to Heed. He emphasized the need for clearer processes to ensure taxpayer money is handled transparently and is accountable.
Additionally, on a recent occasion, Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim highlighted support for improved financial reporting from mayors and city councillors, advocating for residents to have a clear view of how their tax contributions are being utilized.
