British Columbia has seen a significant decrease in wildfire activity, currently reporting just one major fire, according to the latest from the BC Wildfire Service. Favorable weather conditions, including recent rain and cooler temperatures, have aided firefighting efforts across the province, particularly in the southern regions.
The Shetland Creek wildfire, which has necessitated evacuation orders throughout the southern Interior since its detection on July 12, is now deemed to be under control, classified as “being held” at approximately 280 square kilometers in size. This marks a positive shift in managing the numerous wildfires that have affected the area.
As it stands, the only notable fire remaining is the Corya Creek fire in the northwest region. This designation refers to fires that are prominently visible or pose a risk to surrounding communities and properties.
In their latest update, the wildfire service indicated that several other significant fires in the southern part of the province have been brought under control or are being managed within their established boundaries. Statewide, the number of active wildfires has decreased to about 330.
The majority of fires are currently in the “mop-up” phase, where firefighting crews actively cool off the peripheries to ensure full containment. However, the agency warns that while recent rainfall has been beneficial, it has not fully resolved the severe drought conditions plaguing many areas of the province. Consequently, the wildfire season remains ongoing.
Parts of northern British Columbia continue to experience dry conditions, contributing to ongoing fire risks. Currently, nearly 100 of B.C.’s active wildfires are burning uncontrollably, with over 90 percent reported to have originated from lightning strikes.
To mitigate fire hazards, campfires are prohibited across the province, except in specific regions, including the Prince George Fire Centre, the Haida Gwaii Forest District, and B.C.’s northwestern corner.
