Babil Khan opens up about the viral apology video, trolling, and how anxiety shaped his reaction.
Babil Khan, the son of renowned actor Irrfan Khan, has become a notable figure in the public sphere, recognized not only for his artistic abilities but also for his openness regarding personal struggles. A video of him last year, in which he repeatedly apologized to a woman after interrupting her photo, gained widespread attention and elicited mixed reactions online. While some praised his genuine humility, others chastised him for appearing overly eager to please or insincere.
In a recent interview with Mid-day, Babil addressed the incident directly. He candidly revealed that his incessant apologies were driven by anxiety. “That ‘sorry sorry sorry’ was me being anxious,” he admitted. He articulated that the situation evolved into a phenomenon he hadn’t anticipated, with certain memes causing him distress. “I sat with [the feeling],” he remarked, reflecting on the emotional turmoil that ensued.
Despite encountering online trolling, Babil emphasized that it did not undermine his self-confidence. Instead, he focused on self-reflection and self-improvement—engaging in activities like reading, diving, and music creation. He recognized the need to step back from public life temporarily, clarifying that this decision stemmed from a desire for personal development rather than resentment. “There were things I needed to work on within myself,” he explained.
As he contemplated his growth, Babil expressed the importance of finding harmony between the roles of a celebrity, an actor, and an individual. “I thought there has to be a balance between the job of a celebrity, that of an actor, and who you are as a human being. You have to find bridges between all of them,” he shared, indicating his journey towards understanding the complexities of identity and public perception. This insight also led him to reassess conventional notions of masculinity.
Babil advocates for a new interpretation of manhood. “You can be the most macho man and still be respectful,” he stated, challenging traditional views of what it means to be an alpha male and promoting a more inclusive understanding of masculinity.
His forthcoming film, Logout, is emblematic of this personal exploration. Slated for release on April 18, 2025, on Zee5, the cyber-thriller features Babil as an influencer who struggles with a dependence on external validation. He described taking on this role as a way to delve deeper into the psyche of social media users and the sacrifices they make for acceptance from a largely unknown audience. “I’m not an avid user, but I took this role to understand why people give up their self-worth for the approval of people they don’t even know,” he noted.
Directed by Amit Golani, Logout aims to shed light on the mental toll associated with digital addiction. Babil Khan appears poised to confront these themes with the same depth of emotion that has already distinguished his work in the film industry.
