Baby John Movie Review: The long-anticipated film Baby John featuring Varun Dhawan has officially been released in theatres. Directed by Kalees, the movie showcases Dhawan in the role of the courageous Deputy Commissioner of Police Satya Verma, with Keerthy Suresh marking her debut in Bollywood as Meera, his supportive spouse. With Jackie Shroff and Rajpal Yadav taking on significant roles, the film has attracted a lot of attention. But does it live up to expectations? Here’s an overview of our assessment.
The narrative of Baby John centers around DCP Satya Verma, a principled police officer whose commitment to justice is unwavering. His world is turned upside down when a feared criminal, Nana (played by Jackie Shroff), unleashes chaos upon his family, pushing Satya to his limits.
The film’s standout feature is undoubtedly its cast. Varun Dhawan takes center stage as DCP Satya Verma, combining confidence with emotional depth in his portrayal. His ability to transition from moments of courage to vulnerability and humor reflects his versatility as an actor. Particularly impressive is his performance in the upbeat musical number Nain Matakka.
Keerthy Suresh blossoms in her first Bollywood role as Meera. Her ability to deliver nuanced lines coupled with her expressive performance makes her a significant highlight of the film. Through Baby John, Keerthy unequivocally establishes her potential as an actress in the Hindi film industry.
Jackie Shroff delivers a compelling and sinister portrayal as the antagonist Nana. While his performance is impactful, one can’t help but feel that the limited duration of his appearance underutilizes his talents, missing the chance for more dramatic exchanges with Dhawan that could have enriched the film’s storyline.
Wamiqa Gabbi’s role adds depth to the film, portraying a strong and fascinating character that introduces an element of surprise. Nevertheless, like Shroff, her limited screen time detracts from the opportunity to fully display her range as an actress.
The ensemble cast also contributes positively; Sheeba Chaddha’s comedic moments provide necessary relief, while Rajpal Yadav offers unexpected comedic flair that is enjoyable for his fans.
Despite the strong performances, the film struggles due to weak writing and direction. The storyline feels overly stretched, particularly in the first half, which bears resemblance to Akshay Kumar’s Rowdy Rathore. While the second half picks up the pace, it remains predictable, lacking in any real suspense or originality.
The presence of unnecessary humor detracts from the overall impact of the film. A special appearance by Sanya Malhotra, performing a classical version of Sheila Ki Jawani, seems out of place and does not resonate with the audience.
Furthermore, the much-anticipated cameo by Salman Khan feels like an afterthought, introduced late in the film without adding any meaningful depth or significance to the plot.
In summary, while Baby John features commendable performances from its cast, it doesn’t quite succeed as a thrilling action film due to a lackluster storyline and inconsistent pacing.
