Spring Fashion Takes a Bright Turn at New York’s Fashion Week

This season at New York Fashion Week, a notable sense of despair has permeated backstage among several designers. With a challenging economic landscape and the looming shadow of an impending U.S. election, many leading fashion figures have expressed the urgent need for joy and optimism through their collections. Designer Bach Mai was among those artists opening up about the pressing struggles facing young talents in the industry. “This last year has been the hardest of my life,” he shared before unveiling his latest collection. “It’s harder than ever for young designers right now.”

In response to these prevailing sentiments, Mai sought an emotional uplift within his studio for the spring collection. He found his remedy in the vibrant infusion of color into his renowned evening wear and red carpet designs. “I wanted it to be about clawing through that darkness—there’s not a stitch of black,” Mai explained, quoting Albert Camus: “In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.”

This optimistic color scheme bore the potential to transform even the most somber moods. Drawing inspirations from the artistic approaches of James Turrell and the architectural brilliance of Luis Barragán, Mai crafted an evening collection bursting with lively reds, oranges, pinks, and refreshing seafoam greens. He remarked on Barragán’s unique ability to combine boldness with subtlety in color, emphasizing how these hues paralleled an uplifting experience akin to a mood-enhancing remedy. This was especially evident in Mai’s more minimalist designs, such as a strapless gown featuring a cascading tulle skirt in a joyful palette of red, pink, and purple, as well as a standout white sleeveless top that flowed gracefully into a pale green micro short—a refreshing minty combination.

Mai’s creations this season celebrated a distinctive interpretation of American glamour, highlighted by audacious pieces like colorful organza “jeans.” His designs also reflected influences of mid-century haute couture and elements from traditional Japanese Bijinga art. However, the couture aspect came with its challenges, particularly concerning tailoring and fit. Some of the more intricate garments, including his deep-V dresses with flowing pleated skirts, exhibited fitting issues at the bust, a notable concern in the world of high fashion. Nevertheless, the luxurious materials used—such as sumptuous failles, moirés, and satins—demonstrated his commitment to quality. Mai articulated a desire for lightness in his creations; however, occasionally his ambitious design cuts detracted from the vibrancy of the colors and textures.

While certain stylistic choices—such as robust bands across the hips, leather gloves, and cinched waist ropes—felt somewhat superfluous, the overall maximalist approach is likely to resonate with Mai’s expanding celebrity clientele, who have embraced his work; he recently styled Amal Clooney for an appearance in Venice. One striking outfit after another illuminated the runway, suggesting a bright future where Mai’s designs would indeed spark joy at prestigious events like the Oscars or the Emmys.
