Backbone One Xbox Edition Review: Can’t Get Enough of This Controller!

Backbone One Xbox Edition

The Backbone One Xbox Edition is an impressive mobile controller tailored for enthusiasts of the original Xbox console. While its premium price point may lead some gamers to consider more budget-friendly options, the high-quality construction combined with a comfortable design and exceptional gameplay experience makes it a standout choice.

Since experiencing my first telescopic mobile controller, I have been captivated by their convenience. However, after a brief trial with the Backbone One Xbox Edition, it became clear that this new gadget would replace my go-to option. It is sleek, lightweight, and has a nostalgic design that resonates with those who grew up as Xbox fans.

This edition functions primarily as a new color variant of the second-generation Backbone One, reminiscent of the PlayStation Edition released earlier. If you have an affinity for Xbox, this model is a clear contender; it ranks as the best mobile controller I have used to date.

The Ideal Mobile Gaming Companion

Incorporating translucent green plastic, the Xbox Edition of the Backbone evokes memories of the classic Xbox era while maintaining a modern aesthetic. It diverges significantly from older models like The Duke and even the newer Xbox Core controllers, presenting a more compact and user-friendly design. Functionally, it shares similarities with the Nintendo Switch controller layout, which is a positive aspect.

This smaller design allows for easy portability, fitting comfortably into a bag, but it does mean the analog sticks are not full-sized. For individuals with medium-sized hands, the Backbone is manageable, though those with larger hands might find the fit somewhat snug. Nonetheless, its solid construction ensures stability during use without any wobbling.

One of the standout features is its lightweight nature. Attaching the controller to a smartphone adds minimal weight, making it perfect for extended gaming sessions. The buttons are responsive and have satisfying feedback, and the design extends below the phone, providing a more comfortable grip without adding bulk to the sides.

The Backbone One Xbox Edition blends Xbox aesthetics with a control layout akin to that of the Switch.

For users who utilize a protective phone case, the Backbone Xbox Edition accommodates this well. It comes equipped with two distinct magnetic attachments designed to secure a variety of phone types. In my experience, it held both a case-less REDMAGIC 10 Pro and a Google Pixel 9 with a robust Mous case securely, suggesting compatibility with most phone models.

However, it is essential to note that this model only features USB-C compatibility, which might exclude older iPhone users. Additionally, unlike some other controllers such as the GameSir G8 Plus, it does not support Bluetooth, limiting its use for gaming beyond mobile platforms.

Engineered for Xbox, Perfect for Other Uses

Although this controller is undoubtedly aimed at Xbox enthusiasts, its primary connection to the Xbox ecosystem is via Xbox Game Pass. As a keen supporter of game streaming—whether through cloud services or local networks—telescopic controllers like the Backbone are superb for enhancing gameplay on mobile devices.

I have also enjoyed utilizing this controller for emulation of classic games. It includes features that elevate the gaming experience: a headphone jack—rarely found in modern smartphones—and a passthrough USB port, allowing for charging while gaming. These additions are conveniently located on the bottom of the handles, so they do not interfere with gameplay.

For those interested in streaming, the Xbox Edition provides a complimentary month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, worth $20, which somewhat mitigates the $10 price increment compared to the standard version. However, this offer is limited to new subscribers, leaving dedicated fans unable to benefit.

Despite the high price tag of $110, which places it among the costliest controllers available, the Backbone One Xbox Edition packs value. There is also the option of a subscription service called Backbone Plus, which costs an additional $40 annually. This subscription enhances the app’s functionality and enables the Backbone to be used as a USB-C controller for PC or Mac. Nevertheless, alternative frontends like ES-DE offer similar features at reduced prices.

Even without the subscription, the Backbone ranks as one of the finest mobile controllers available. However, for many users, justifying the $10 premium for the Xbox Edition over the standard model ($99.99 at Amazon) may be challenging. For enthusiastic Xbox fans, the unique appeal of this controller might make the investment worthwhile, especially in anticipation of a potential dedicated Xbox gaming handheld from Microsoft.
