Baker Mayfield Leads Buccaneers to Crucial Victory Over Panthers
Once again, the NFC South division title race remains tightly contested among the four teams, making a victory for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – currently leading the division entering Week 17 – critical on Sunday. Quarterback Baker Mayfield rose to the occasion in a commanding performance.
In a decisive clash against the Carolina Panthers, Mayfield threw five touchdown passes, including two to prominent receiver Mike Evans, as the Buccaneers triumphed 48-14 at Raymond James Stadium. This victory propelled Tampa Bay’s record to 9-7, positioning them favorably as they await the outcome of the Atlanta Falcons’ game later in the day. The Falcons, who sit one game behind the Buccaneers in the division at 8-7, were set to face the Washington Commanders.
Mayfield showcased remarkable precision throughout the game, completing 27 of 32 passes for 359 yards. His performance kicked off with an immediate touchdown connection to Evans on a quick slant during the opening drive. Evans was instrumental in the victory, making eight receptions for 97 yards.

As the game progressed, Mayfield also demonstrated trust in rookie wide receiver Jalen McMillan, finding him for two touchdowns in the second half. McMillan notched five catches for 51 yards, solidifying his role in the offense as the season advances. Tight end Payne Durham, filling in for the injured Cade Otton, also contributed with a touchdown from one of his two receptions.
On the ground, while no Buccaneers player made a significant impact in terms of rushing touchdowns, Bucky Irving stood out with 113 yards on 20 carries, providing a steady rushing presence for the team. Special teams also played a pivotal role, with the Bucs blocking a Panthers punt, which J.J. Russell returned for a touchdown, highlighting Tampa Bay’s dominance in the second half with a 21-0 run.
Initially, the Panthers matched Tampa Bay’s scoring efforts. Quarterback Bryce Young connected with Adam Thielen on their opening drive for a touchdown, leveling the score at 7-7. Thielen ended the game with another touchdown reception, totaling five catches for 110 yards. However, the Buccaneers’ defense tightened after halftime, effectively shutting down the Panthers’ attempts to recover.
Young concluded the matchup having completed 15 of 28 passes for 203 yards, with both of his touchdowns going to Thielen. As the Buccaneers prepare for their final matchup of the regular season against a struggling New Orleans Saints team, they will keep an eye on the Falcons, hoping Atlanta will drop a game in the next two weeks to allow Tampa Bay to secure the division, especially since the Falcons hold the tiebreaker.
