Barbara Lee, a prominent progressive figure and former Congresswoman, declared her victory in the special election for the next mayor of Oakland following a concession from her rival, Loren Taylor. This announcement came on a Saturday, marking a significant moment in the city’s political landscape.

In a statement, Taylor revealed that he had reached out to Lee after the latest election results indicated she was leading. “This morning I called Congresswoman Barbara Lee to congratulate her on becoming the next Mayor of Oakland,” he stated. Taylor acknowledged the effort of their campaign team, emphasizing the movement they created and its resonance with Oakland residents. He also expressed hope that Lee would unite the community, particularly engaging the nearly half of voters who supported him.

According to the latest update from the Alameda County Registrar of Voters, Lee held a lead of almost 5,000 votes over Taylor, capturing 50.6% of the total. In the context of the election, a candidate must secure more than 50% of the vote to be declared the winner. The registrar indicated that the next update would be available on April 25.

Lee, in her own statement, remarked on the importance of the democratic voting process, while also signifying clarity in the election results. “While I believe strongly in respecting the democratic voting process and ballots will continue to be counted through Tuesday, the results are clear that the people of Oakland have elected me as your next Mayor. Thank you, Oakland,” she stated.

Prior to Taylor’s concession, District 7 Councilmember Ken Houston publicly congratulated Lee, noting her humility and carefulness in awaiting the final tally. Houston expressed confidence in the outcome, stating that a gap of 5,000 votes was insurmountable, reinforcing that the electorate had made its choice.

Barbara Lee has a rich political background, having served in Congress representing Oakland from 1998 until she stepped down in January. Alongside her congressional career, she ran an unsuccessful campaign for the late Dianne Feinstein’s Senate seat last year. Lee has also held positions in the California State Assembly and Senate, accumulating extensive legislative experience. She holds a degree from Mills College in Oakland and a master’s in social work from UC Berkeley.

The election featured Oakland’s ranked choice voting system, which allows voters to indicate their first choice for mayor and list additional candidates in order of preference. If no candidate achieves a majority in the initial count, the ranked votes are redistributed until one candidate surpasses the 50% threshold.

Lee and Taylor were viewed as the primary contenders in a competitive field of ten candidates, a race that was prompted by the recent recall of former Mayor Sheng Thao last year.
