Barry Ferguson Aims to Transform Rangers amid Management Uncertainty
Barry Ferguson has expressed his commitment to enhancing Rangers if appointed as the permanent manager, indicating that he would step away from management if he does not secure the role. The former Ibrox captain has taken charge following the departure of Philippe Clement in February, transitioning from his previous position as club ambassador.
Recently, Rangers announced “productive conversations” with a U.S.-based consortium regarding a potential takeover. Alongside this development, the club disclosed that Kevin Thelwell will be joining as sporting director from Everton at the end of the current season.
As Ferguson prepares to guide Rangers through the concluding matches of a season without silverware, he emphasized his determination to improve the club. This responsibility begins with an upcoming match against St Mirren on Saturday.
“If I get the job, I will make my club a better club,” Ferguson asserted, noting the critical injury status of left-back Ridvan Yilmaz, who is sidelined for the rest of the season due to an injury sustained during the Europa League quarter-final against Athletic Club. “If I don’t get the job, I will still support the club. That’s how I see it. My focus remains on the upcoming weeks, especially with five games left, the last being on May 17.”
Ferguson acknowledged the challenges he has faced since taking over, admitting, “There have been a few bumps, but I was prepared for that. I recognize the changes that are necessary.” Although he is aware of other candidates with more extensive experience, he remains confident in his own abilities: “While I may not appeal to everyone, I believe I can fulfill the role effectively with the support of my staff. We will see what happens.”
When asked about the possibility of managing another club if Rangers choose a different path, Ferguson responded firmly, “No—this is my club, and I wasn’t seeking to return to coaching.” He reflected on the unexpected chance he has been given, stating, “I’ve enjoyed every moment since taking on this challenge, although some results have been disappointing.”
Looking ahead, Ferguson plans to discuss the club’s direction with Thelwell, aiming for transparency regarding the current state of Rangers. “I intend to meet with him when the time comes. I will be straightforward about what I see,” he explained. “Thelwell’s experience across various clubs, including prominent ones, makes him a valuable addition, and his appointment was necessary for the club’s future.”
