Director Andrea Arnold has creatively adapted her upcoming film Bird for the music video of “Bug,” performed by Fontaines D.C., which will be released on Friday.
Arnold, known for her work on Big Little Lies and American Honey, has woven elements of her film into the music video. In Bird, actor Barry Keoghan portrays a character named Bug, a struggling single father of a 12-year-old daughter, played by the promising newcomer, Nykiya Adams. The video incorporates scenes from the film, highlighting the narrative’s emotional core. Notably, this marks Keoghan’s second appearance in a music video this year after featuring in “Please Please Please” by his girlfriend, Sabrina Carpenter.

The song “Bug” has garnered attention for its swift creation and the collective enthusiasm it inspired among the band members. Guitarist Carlos O’Connell remarked on the harmony between the character Bug, a tattoo reading “Bug’s Life,” and the romantic elements emphasized by Arnold in her cinematic work. He stated, “In my eyes, the character Bug, the tattoo ‘Bug’s Life,’ Andrea’s essential & romantic worlds, and the line ‘Changed my name to “Promise you, Yea”‘ come together convincingly.” O’Connell expressed gratitude to Arnold for allowing the band to connect so closely with her artistic vision, drawing comparisons to celebrated artists like Bacon and Goya in his appreciation.
“Bug” is the latest single from Fontaines D.C.’s fourth studio album, Romance, which was launched in August. Following their recent release, the band is set to embark on a European and U.K. tour this fall, with plans to return for additional North American dates in the spring.
