Well-Known Bassist Chandramouli Biswas Found Dead in Kolkata
Chandramouli Biswas, a celebrated bassist within the Bengali music scene, was discovered deceased at his home near Wellington in Kolkata on Sunday evening. The 48-year-old musician was known for his contributions to prominent bands such as Fossils, Golok, and Zombie Cage Control.
His death has been reported as a suicide, according to various sources including The Times of India. The grim announcement came after Golok’s lead vocalist, Mohul Chakraborty, reportedly found his body and promptly notified both local residents and the authorities. Expressing his sorrow, Mohul recounted, “Biswas wasn’t responding to my calls all morning, causing me concern. I reached out to one of his close friends, and together we went to his house where we discovered him deceased. This is a tremendous loss for the entire Bengal music industry.” Chandramouli’s journey from engineering to music highlights his dedication, and he leaves a lasting impact on the local music community.
Police investigations indicate that Biswas had been struggling with depression for several years, largely stemming from financial challenges. According to a law enforcement official, family members and friends confirmed these ongoing difficulties and acknowledged that he had been “depressed for some years and undergoing treatment.”
A suicide note was reportedly found at the scene, indicating that no one was to be blamed for his death. The handwriting in the note is currently being examined. Authorities have also sent the body for a post-mortem examination as part of the investigation process.
Rupsha Dasgupta, the manager of the band Fossils, shared that Biswas was a member of the group from 2000 until 2018, initially joining as a guitarist before transitioning to the bass guitar. She mentioned that he departed from the band in 2018 due to health issues. “Chandra garnered a significant following among younger audiences, and it is shocking to hear of his passing at such a young age. He was not only an outstanding musician but also a joyful person who connected easily with everyone around him. A brilliant student and former engineer from JU, he chose to pursue his passion for music instead. Chandra played with us for over 15 years and was a vital part of the band. The news has devastated me and the remaining members; we are uncertain how we will continue performing without him,” Rupsha expressed, as reported by Hindustan Times.
