Producer Jennifer Maloney-Prezioso expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “It is a great honor to bring Beaches the Musical to theatres around the country on our pre-Broadway tour. We can’t wait to share this love story about friendship with US presenters, Broadway, the West End and audiences around the globe.”
Adapted from Iris Rainer Dart’s bestselling novel, which also inspired the iconic film featuring Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey, Beaches showcases an impressive score by Grammy Award-winning musician and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Mike Stoller, with lyrics co-written by Dart herself, alongside a book developed by Dart and Thom Thomas in collaboration with David Austin. The music supervision is directed by Joseph Thalken, with Katie Coleman serving as music director and Charlie Rosen as orchestrator. The production is under the guidance of Emmy-winning and Tony-nominated director Lonny Price, who is assisted by co-director Matt Cowart and choreographer Jennifer Rias.
This innovative musical chronicles the poignant journey of two remarkable friends, Cee Cee and Bertie, over three decades filled with shared joy, hardship, and love. Cee Cee, vivacious and free-spirited, befriends the elegant and privileged Bertie during their childhood. Their relationship evolves from pen pals to college roommates, ultimately leading to romantic rivalries. Throughout this rollercoaster of emotions, their contrasting personalities illustrate the resilience of friendship amidst life’s challenges. Beaches poignantly embodies the triumph of the human spirit and the enduring bonds of sisterhood.
The international premiere showcased an exceptional creative team, including scenic design by James Noone (notable for Sunset Boulevard and Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill), costume by Tracy Christensen (whose Broadway credits include Sunset Boulevard), lighting design by Ken Billington (Smash, Waitress, and Chicago), sound design by Kai Harada (Merrily We Roll Along, Spamalot, Kimberly Akimbo), and projection design by David Bengali (well known for Water for Elephants and Good Night, and Good Luck). The show’s wig and makeup design was crafted by J. Jared Janas, with casting managed by The TRC Company, led by Peter Van Dam, CSA.
