The Transformation of a Historic Home: Blending Style and Family Needs

Constructed in 1888, a Queen Anne–style residence carries a rich history and character. Interior designer Beata Heuman, alongside her head of design, Fosca Mariani, faced lighthearted rivalry to secure the opportunity to revitalize this stately home. The homeowner, a former financier residing with her husband and their three young children, first encountered Heuman’s work through a design publication. Although initially enchanted, she harbored doubts about whether Heuman’s whimsical approach would suit a home with such traditional prominence. Nevertheless, she extended an invitation for Heuman to tour the property.

Reflecting on their initial meeting, Heuman recalls, “We strolled through and brainstormed ideas.” Following this visit, the client felt a newfound sense of assurance regarding the design process. Heuman noted that the homeowner commented on how uniquely the house began to reflect her personal style, diverging from prior projects.

For the family, the collaborative design experience fostered a strong personal connection. The homeowner elaborated, “Beata truly comprehends our needs, as she hails from Sweden yet has deep ties to the UK. We are also German expatriates who have made this country our home for some time. With children of similar ages, she understands that our living space needs to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. It was an ideal pairing.”

One of the standout features in the renovation includes the exquisite Balineum tile, which beautifully adorns both the walls and flooring of the bathroom.

The residence was well-maintained but bore the hallmarks of a more formal modern neoclassical decor. Heuman’s vision was to honor the home’s historical essence while creating a welcoming family environment. She embraced the house’s distinctive features, including its non-linear rooms and unique rooflines, while meticulously restoring original elements such as ornamental ceilings and fireplaces.
