Robert Eggers has recently established himself as a formidable presence in gothic horror with his latest film, Nosferatu. Prior to taking on this iconic vampire story, Eggers had envisioned a different adaptation, showcasing his creative versatility.

Released during the bustling holiday season, Nosferatu has garnered significant acclaim from both critics and viewers alike, solidifying its position as Eggers’ highest-grossing film to date.

However, the menacing Count Orlok is not the only legendary figure from horror that Eggers has engaged with creatively. He had previously attempted to develop another much-admired story in the genre.

Regrettably, Eggers referred to this earlier endeavor as a “dud.”

Eggers’ Unfinished Work on Frankenstein

Before he delved into Nosferatu, Eggers explored the possibility of adapting Mary Shelley’s celebrated novel, Frankenstein. Although this project never reached fruition, he remains eager to see Guillermo del Toro’s forthcoming interpretation of the classic tale.

“Sometimes, you just know you’ve got something that doesn’t work,” he shared with Curzon. “I’m really looking forward to Guillermo del Toro’s version. After my son was born, I felt a strong pull to work on Frankenstein.”

“But after two weeks, I realized it was beyond my capabilities. I’m happy that Guillermo is finally bringing it to life.”

When asked for details about his uncompleted adaptation of Frankenstein, Eggers humorously declined to elaborate, stating, “No comment, but I can assure you it wasn’t good.”

In parallel news, Guillermo del Toro’s long-awaited version of Frankenstein is currently in post-production, set to premiere on Netflix later this year. The film features Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi portraying the creature.
