Spa-Francorchamps Secures Formula 1 Future with New Contract

The Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps has secured a new contract that extends its presence in Formula 1 through a rotational system over the next six seasons. The agreement allows the iconic venue to host races in 2026, 2027, 2029, and 2031, while it will be absent from the calendar in 2028 and 2030.

Previously, the contract for the Belgian race was due to expire after this year’s event, leading organizers to advocate for a new five-year arrangement. However, with a surge in interest from potential new venues looking to host Formula 1, and F1’s intent to broaden its reach into the Asian market, the Spa-Francorchamps race was identified as one of several European events suitable for a rotational schedule.

This new arrangement benefits both Spa and Formula 1. It provides Spa’s organizers, who rely on financial support from the Walloon government, with a longer contract that allows for greater financial stability and the opportunity to recoup investments. For F1, it creates room for new venues while maintaining a maximum of 24 races per season.

Stefano Domenicali, F1’s president and CEO, praised Spa-Francorchamps, stating, “This circuit is acclaimed by drivers and fans as one of the best in the world, and it has been the scene of remarkable moments throughout its history in Formula 1. The recent upgrades to the facility have significantly enhanced the overall experience for fans, and I commend the promoter and the Government of Wallonia for their steadfast support of F1 in Belgium.”

Organizers Melchior Wathelet and Vanessa Maes expressed their pride in the renewal, emphasizing the trust built through infrastructure improvements and record attendance figures in recent years. They credited the Walloon Government and fans for their essential roles in securing this extension, reflecting a shared commitment to developing the region.

The European Race Landscape

Spa’s renewal leaves only Barcelona and Imola with uncertain futures in Europe, as both are facing the end of their current contracts. Imola’s deal is set to expire after this season, while Barcelona is scheduled to host its last race in 2026, with its Grand Prix name being transferred to a new venue in Madrid.

The competition for European race slots has notably diminished after the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort announced its decision to conclude after the 2026 season, impacting the overall landscape of F1 events in the region.

Rich History of the Belgian Grand Prix

The Belgian Grand Prix has a storied history, with its roots tracing back to 1950 as one of the initial seven races on the world championship’s inaugural calendar. Originally held on a challenging 14km circuit through the Ardennes forests, the event has shifted locations over the years, including time spent at Zolder and Nivelles.

After a return in the 1980s to a modified Spa-Francorchamps, the circuit remains a favorite among fans and drivers alike. Since 1985, Spa has hosted the Belgian Grand Prix annually, apart from interruptions in 2003 and 2006. The recent contract extension marks a significant chapter for a venue that continues to be an essential part of the Formula 1 narrative.
