Maximus, a beloved alligator snapping turtle aged approximately 125 years, has passed away, as confirmed by officials at the North Carolina Zoo on Friday. His lengthy life and engaging presence captivated both the staff and the numerous visitors who came to see him.
Audrey Williams, a zookeeper at the facility, referred to Maximus as “a true marvel of nature” when announcing his death. She fondly remembered him as “the gentle giant of the North Carolina Zoo.”
Maximus resided in the zoo’s Cypress Swamp section since 2015 and quickly became a cherished figure among both staff and guests alike. According to Williams, he elicited smiles from all who encountered him.
When Maximus was first brought to the zoo, he did not have a designated name. Williams took it upon herself to name him, believing he deserved a title that suited his majestic presence.
Zoo officials estimated that Maximus was born around 1900, making his life span remarkably long for his species.
In her tribute, Williams reflected on her time spent with this gentle creature: “Over the years, we shared countless quiet moments, and I had the privilege of getting to ‘swim’ with him as I cleaned his pool.”
“Despite his size, we danced together in our slow, routine movements, each of us occupying our own space, a ritual I will never forget,” she recalled, highlighting the special bond they shared.
Maximus was known as “always a quiet observer,” often swimming close to children who gazed into his enclosure, further endearing himself to the younger visitors.
Williams closed her heartfelt statement with a reflection on his legacy: “Maximus may no longer be with us, but his spirit will live on in our memories and in the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. Rest in peace, Maximus. You will always be remembered.”
