Ben Affleck on His Discontent with the Batsuit: “Horrendous” and Unbearably Hot

Ben Affleck has openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the Batsuit he donned while portraying Batman, referring to it as “horrendous.” The 52-year-old actor portrayed the iconic superhero in 2016’s ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,’ followed by ‘Justice League’ a year later, and made a return in the 2023 film ‘The Flash.’ However, he confided that wearing the costume was one of the least enjoyable aspects of his experience.

In a candid interview with GQ, Affleck shared his grievances: “I hated the Batsuits. The Batsuits are horrendous to wear. They’re incredibly hot, for one thing. They don’t breathe.” He lamented the lack of consideration for the actors who wear them, emphasizing that the suits are designed more for aesthetics than comfort.

Affleck elaborated on the physical toll the costume took on him, describing how it led to excessive sweating. “You just start sweating. Now I’m already – I sweat, you know what I mean? I get hot. And so in that thing, you would just be pouring water because it’s got the cowl over it,” he said.

The heat became an issue not only for him but also for the stunt coordinators, who faced similar challenges. He noted that even seasoned professionals could only manage to wear the suit for 45 to 50 minutes before succumbing to the oppressive heat, often at risk of heat stroke.

Filming under such conditions added to the difficulties, as Affleck found himself frequently exhausted. “It just made it difficult to make the movie because it was so hot,” he remarked. The discomfort detracted from the feeling of heroism one might expect from playing a character like Batman. He joked about trying to maintain a façade of composure while sweat dripped down his face, stating, “Like, ‘No, we can go again, I’m fine, I’m good.’ And then there’ll be like – eye black is like, running.”

Reflecting on his experiences, Affleck admitted that predecessors like Christian Bale and Robert Pattinson seemed better equipped to handle the demanding suit, which he found to be the most unenjoyable part of his tenure as Batman. He also revealed that he has no plans to return to superhero roles, expressing a sense of disinterest moving forward.

“There are a number of reasons why that [playing Batman] was a really excruciating experience,” he told GQ. “And they don’t all have to do with the simple dynamic of, say, being in a superhero movie or whatever.” He indicated that his waning interest in the genre was not solely based on his less-than-favorable experiences but also a shift in his personal perspective on acting.

Affleck acknowledged that during that period, he was not at his best as an actor, admitting to personal struggles that affected his performance. “A lot of it was misalignment of agendas, understandings, expectations,” he noted, adding that he was not contributing positively to the set environment at the time.

He concluded that while he witnessed his own shortcomings, he understood that he must strive for more than just going through the motions in his future projects.
