Insights on Utility Industry Transformation from Ryker Holdings CEO
At the DTECH 2025 event, Ben Wilson, the Founder and CEO of Ryker Holdings, engaged in a thoughtful discussion with Angela Godwin regarding his initial foray into the utility sector and his insights on next-generation utility construction at his company.
According to Wilson, the utility industry has historically been slow to evolve, but a notable shift has emerged recently. He identifies one primary driver of this change: the escalating demand for energy solutions.
“It’s all about demand—demand, demand, demand,” Wilson commented. “With the advent of extreme weather conditions and the need to mobilize resources for storm events, we’re facing tighter timelines. The challenge lies in ensuring we don’t overextend our workforce while also providing the necessary training.”
Contract utility companies such as Ryker are increasingly vital in navigating the industry’s shifting landscape, which is marked by frequent severe weather and the burgeoning need for energy due to the growth of data centers, according to Wilson.
“I strongly believe in the power of collaboration among numerous smaller enterprises rather than relying solely on a single large firm,” Wilson noted. “The landscape includes substantial investment corporations and major private equity firms, but at its core, this industry is built on relationships.”
As the energy transition picks up momentum, Wilson emphasizes the importance of small businesses, like Ryker Holdings, which he thinks still fits within the ‘small business’ categorization in the sector. He advocates for the cultivation and reinforcement of a robust local business ecosystem.
“While demand is increasing, we hold a shared responsibility—both in the private and public domains—to uplift our local communities,” Wilson asserted. “It is imperative that we nurture and support local families as part of our role within this industry.”
