Bernie Sanders Dismisses AOC Senate Speculation During Interview
During a recent interview with ABC News, Senator Bernie Sanders abruptly attempted to conclude the discussion when asked about the possibility of Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joining him in the U.S. Senate.
In response to the query posed by ABC News’ Jonathan Karl, Sanders, an independent senator from Vermont, expressed a desire to move on from what he labeled as “inside the Beltway stuff.” He remarked, “Right now, we have, as I said, just a whole lot of people in the Congress. OK, Jonathan, thanks,” as he rose from his chair. He added, “You want to do nonsense, do nonsense.”

The conversation surrounding Ocasio-Cortez’s political trajectory has intensified, particularly as she and Sanders rally progressive supporters across swing districts. Their recent “Fighting Oligarchy” event in Denver attracted over 30,000 attendees, showcasing their considerable influence within the party.
The current backdrop includes Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer facing criticism from the left flank of the Democratic Party for supporting a Republican-backed spending bill to avoid a government shutdown. This decision has drawn ire from progressive figures like Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez, who have been vocal about their dissatisfaction.

Looking ahead, Schumer’s reelection campaign in 2028 raises questions about Ocasio-Cortez’s ambitions, with many considering her a strong candidate for the Senate. There are also speculations regarding her potential bid for the presidency, particularly as Sanders has stated he does not plan to run again after two previous campaigns. Ocasio-Cortez has yet to make her political aspirations clear publicly, adding further intrigue to her future.
After his initial attempt to end the conversation, Sanders returned to the interview chair for one last question about his own presidential aspirations. “Right now, I’m Vermont’s senator. That’s what I do. And I’m very happy to do it,” he shared. “I am 83 years of age, and I’m tired.”
