Graci Kim, the author of the bestselling The Gifted Clans series, returns with an innovative contemporary fantasy series that invites readers to immerse themselves in a world where dragons and phoenixes soar above the vibrant city of Seoul. In Dreamslinger (Disney), the first installment of this middle-grade series, magical meals appear based on one’s emotional state, and dreams manifest into reality. This series boldly introduces a Korean-inspired perspective within the beloved magic school genre, exploring profound themes like discrimination, segregation, and the quest for acceptance through a captivating narrative of adventure and friendship. The highly anticipated book will be available for readers on April 29, promising to bring their dreams to life.
Aria Loveridge emerges as a compelling and relatable protagonist. What was the creative process behind her character development, and did she present any surprises during your writing journey?
The conception of Aria coincided with a significant moment in my daughter’s life, as she transitioned from toddlerhood to a spirited preschooler. Her profound emotional experiences made me ponder the idea of a group of children with such intense feelings that they could manifest physical powers. How would society respond to them if they struggled to manage those exceptional abilities? Would they be perceived as threats?
This inquiry laid the groundwork for Aria’s character. As I began to write, she revealed herself as not only sensitive and empathetic but also introspective and resilient. No matter how challenging I made her journey—something every writer enjoys putting their characters through—Aria consistently demonstrated that, even in difficult circumstances, she chose to face the world with courage and determination. We could all take a lesson from her strength.
Children are naturally drawn to the concept of dreams, and many writers find inspiration in them. How do your own dream experiences influence your work?
I’ve always had a fascination with dreams and their mysterious nature, especially since scientists still struggle to fully understand them. The enigma surrounding dreams serves as an enticing source of inspiration for any writer.
In my childhood, I faced a recurring nightmare involving a ghostly figure attempting to reach inside me while my grandmother cried beside me. This disturbing vision vanished abruptly when my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer, leading me to ponder the connection between dreams and deeper realities. The idea that dreams could predict future events remains one of life’s intriguing mysteries.
What aspects of Korean culture did you incorporate into Dreamslinger?
My curiosity about the Korean royal family and their potential role in modern society influenced the narrative. I imagined an alternate reality where they still existed, nestled within Seoul as a sovereign nation similar to the Vatican in Rome. This tiny kingdom could serve as a sanctuary for individuals possessing extraordinary magical abilities, creating a dynamic world where cultural and global influences converge.
Once I established this foundation, the integration of Korean cultural elements flowed naturally. I aimed to blend traditional roots with contemporary influences, showcasing them through architecture, language, transportation, and clothing. The goal was to craft a hybrid world that feels both unique and familiar, allowing readers to immerse themselves completely.
Dreamslinger explores significant themes such as isolation, discrimination, trauma, and emotional suppression. Did these themes develop naturally within your story?
Reflecting on my childhood, I often intervened in my parents’ disputes, believing that uncovering the truth could resolve their conflicts. This experience instilled in me a sense of frustration coupled with the understanding that life is rarely black and white. Many truths can coexist simultaneously.
While Dreamslinger is not a direct reflection of my parents’ experiences, I crafted a story about navigating the complexities of reality and the courage required to embrace ambiguity. An essential message I wanted to convey is the importance of forging one’s own truths, particularly for Aria, who learns that her uniqueness lies in her ability to choose her own path.
Although the events in Dreamslinger are fantastical, the core of the story remains relatable. How did you find this balance?
As a writer, I relish the opportunity to create fantastical worlds; however, grounding characters in human experiences is crucial for reader connection. Despite their extraordinary surroundings, characters that embody universal desires—such as belonging, love, and purpose—will resonate with readers across different backgrounds.
Dreamslinger features richly developed world-building. What inspired this intricate universe?
My world of Dreamslinger draws inspiration from many sources, including the X-Men, Pokémon, and magic schools. More specifically, two primary influences shaped its foundation.
First, I explored the Korean philosophy of Ohaeng, which encompasses five key states of being in life. This philosophy includes the five cardinal directions, seasons, representative creatures, and virtues. Elements of Ohaeng resonate throughout the kingdom in Dreamslinger, reflected in palace names, geographical locations, and the virtues associated with characters.
Second, I considered how this philosophy could manifest in a world inhabited by individuals blessed with a genetic mutation that allows them to traverse their dreams. The exploration of this concept led to numerous iterations of the world’s dynamics, and I hope readers delight in the imaginative universe crafted within the story.
Is it natural for you to embody the voices of teenage characters?
Absolutely! Maybe it’s because I’ve never fully left that phase behind. Each of us retains a childlike wonder within us, despite our years. It’s essential to cherish that sense of awe amidst life’s complexities.
The many unique “beasts” featured in the book are captivating. What inspired their creation, and will any plushie versions be available?
The origins of these “beasts” connect back to the Ohaeng philosophy, yet the portrayal of dreampanions as vital extensions of one’s soul is a concept I developed, inspired by the experience of motherhood.
Bringing a child into the world unveiled a part of my soul I hadn’t recognized before. The idea of nurturing a dreampanion reflects that journey. Inspiration can indeed come from the most unexpected places!
As of now, there are no plushies in production. However, interested readers can join the Dreamslinger League through my website (www.gracikim.com) to receive collectible cards featuring the four dreampanions, a sampler of the first chapters, a guide, a signed bookplate, and other fun surprises!
Are there any hints about what to expect in upcoming installments of the series?
While I cannot disclose too much at this stage as the series is still developing, I can share that Aria and her friends begin to challenge the stringent regulations of the Royal League of Dreamslingers, uncovering hidden secrets along the way. This journey will lead them to discover their capacities and aspirations as dreamslingers, possibly involving an adventure to South Korea’s Jeju Island! Fans are encouraged to join the Dreamslinger League on my website or follow me on Instagram @gracikimwrites for updates on the series.
